HDR is hiring an experienced Physical Substation Engineer to join our growing and nationally ranked team of Power Delivery professionals in Florida in our Orlando, FL office. This position can also be located in Tampa or Miami.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Responsible for execution of the technical aspects and deliverables of projects assigned, with the ability to provide asset management reviews, risk assessments, and financial investment plans for replacement of equipment
  • Manage key technical aspects for substation physical project deliverables: one-line, three-line, general arrangement, elevations, foundation plan, grounding plan, conduit plan, conduit and cable schedules, bill of materials, SPCC plan, lightning studies, lighting studies, and grounding studies
  • Support large, multi-disciplinary projects including technical leadership, deliverable development, project management, and proposal development       
  • Support the growth of a Substation team and assign tasks to junior level staff and provide technical mentorship to the team.
  • Coordination and assignment of quality control reviews for work performed by junior level engineers and/or designers
  • Participate in power delivery marketing efforts, communications and client development with business, operations, marketing, and project staff to maximize client satisfaction, company growth and profitability       
  • Work with Senior Engineers and the Business Class Leader to identify and develop specific technical expertise
  • Track financial aspects of projects, and coordinate and adjust work effort with team to ensure that work is completed within parameters of agreed-to schedule
  • Attend training and seminars focused on further development and understanding of complex concepts related to their discipline
  • May also assist with developing technical papers and/or presentations that showcase HDR's technical capabilities at industry conferences or other events
  • Establish strong client relationships in the region and an in-depth understanding of the clients' business objectives to determine the most effective execution strategies
  • Support the growth of local teams and/or leverage existing staff across the company to execute work and deliver world class services to clients 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Understands physical substation design including yard layouts, plans, sections and details, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, interior and exterior raceways, auxiliary AC/DC power systems, and associated bills of material
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience
  • Specific experience performing work associated with substation design including one line diagrams, general arrangements, section views, grounding plans, conduit plans, material lists, relay and control schematics, and wiring diagrams
  • Previous experience in the Power Market Sector with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm
  • Client management, marketing, and business development skills in addition to contacts and relationships with power delivery clients
  • Proven track record of working cooperatively with diverse teams, regional, department, technical managers, and project staff
  • Ability to travel
  • Preference given to local candidates
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license
  • Previous experience in project execution within the Power Market Sector.
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office as well as standard Power Market Sector design software. (examples include PLS CAD, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, AutoPipe, and Revit)
