AspectSheet Metal Fly In Fly OutSheet Metal Installer
CredentialsHigh school diploma, certifications in safety and weldingHigh school diploma, certifications in safety and installation techniques
Work EnvironmentRemote sites, construction projects, industrial facilitiesConstruction sites, commercial and residential buildings
Employer & IndustryMining, oil & gas, large industrial projectsConstruction companies, HVAC, building contractors

Sheet Metal Fly In Fly Out workers typically travel to remote project sites for short-term assignments, focusing on installation and maintenance in industrial settings. What are Sheet Metal Fly In Fly Out jobs?

Sheet Metal Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) jobs involve traveling to remote locations, often on a rostered schedule, to perform sheet metal work such as fabrication, installation, and repairs on construction or industrial sites. Workers are flown in for a set period (like two weeks on) and then flown out for a period of rest (like one week off). These roles are common in mining, oil and gas, or large infrastructure projects where skilled labor is needed on-site temporarily. FIFO arrangements can offer higher pay and unique work experiences, but they also require being away from home for extended periods.

What can I expect from the typical work schedule and team environment in a Sheet Metal Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) position?

In a Sheet Metal FIFO role, you’ll generally work on a rostered schedule, such as two weeks on followed by one week off, with extended daily shifts during your on-site rotation. The work environment is highly collaborative, as you’ll be part of a team responsible for fabricating, installing, and maintaining metal structures, often in mining, oil, or remote industrial sites. Teamwork, clear communication, and adherence to safety protocols are essential, as projects are fast-paced and deadlines are tight. You’ll likely live in shared accommodations on-site, which fosters strong professional relationships but also requires adaptability and respect for others’ routines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sheet Metal Fly In Fly Out worker, and why are they important?

To excel as a Sheet Metal Fly In Fly Out worker, you should have strong skills in sheet metal fabrication, installation, blueprint reading, and typically hold a relevant trade certification or apprenticeship. Familiarity with tools such as brake presses, shears, welding equipment, and often experience with safety management systems is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability to remote environments, and effective teamwork are important soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure high-quality work, compliance with safety standards, and the ability to meet project demands in often challenging and remote job sites.
