Job description

Position: School Psychologist 

FLSA Status: Exempt    Virtual Risk (COVID-19): Mild  Risk  In-Person Teaching Risk: Moderate

General Definition of Work: Performs difficult professional work making diagnostic evaluations of individual pupils to determine disabilities and needs including an assessment and interpretation of the student's intellectual, social and emotional development, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Administrator of Pupil Personnel Services. 

Minimum Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. 

Essential Functions: 

  • Performs diagnostic evaluation of students; assesses and interprets intellectual, social and/or emotional development.
  • Schedules evaluations; secures records from community agencies and observes students.
  • Completes individual psychological evaluations;
  • Completes a written report to be sent to the school, parents and other agencies, including and interpretation of the results of the psychological evaluation.
  • Conducts parent/school conferences, including recommendations for the child's school program and/or home environment.
  • Provides psychological counseling and related services to students when required.
  • Provides and coordinates crisis counseling and intervention services.
  • Serves as a member of the school based threat assessment team
  • Assists in the development of Functional Behavior Assessments and Behavior Intervention Plans
  • Participates as a member  of the schools pupil personnel services team; attends and participates on various committees and boards.
  • Assesses students considered as gifted.
  • Performs related tasks as required. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in the special education process of diagnostic and evaluative procedures; thorough knowledge of federal and state mandate and local procedures and regulations relating to special education program; ability to communicate complex ideas effectively in both oral and written formats; skill in the use of personal computers and related software packages, hardware and peripheral equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, parents and students. 

Education and Experience: Master's degree with coursework in psychology and considerable diagnostic and counseling experience, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Special Requirements: Possession of an appropriate driver's license, certificates(s) and or endorsements(s) (such as Highly Qualified status) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia or School Board.

Data Utilization: Requires the ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and/or analyze data and/or information. HumanI Interaction: Requires the ability to maintain a cordial and effective relationship with visitors and clients. Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions. Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information. Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages as needed; may require ability to utilize principles of fractions and/or interpret graphs as needed. Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution. 

ADA Compliance

Physical Ability: Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work at the work site daily, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (up to 25 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation. Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination; Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; Most tasks require oral communications ability. Environmental Factors: Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances. Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, playground, classroom, light traffic).
