What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Network Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Network Programmer, you need a solid understanding of computer networking concepts, programming languages like Python, C++, or Java, and usually a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with networking protocols (TCP/IP, UDP), version control systems (such as Git), and frameworks for remote communication are commonly required, along with relevant certifications like Cisco's CCNA. Strong problem-solving, self-motivation, and effective written communication skills help you excel in a remote environment and collaborate effectively with distributed teams. These abilities ensure reliable networked applications, efficient troubleshooting, and seamless teamwork across different locations.

What is remote network programming?

Remote network programming involves developing software or applications that manage, monitor, or interact with computer networks from a distance. This can include writing code for network communication protocols, configuring servers, troubleshooting connectivity issues, and ensuring data security between remote locations. Professionals in this field often work with technologies like VPNs, firewalls, APIs, and cloud networking tools, enabling organizations to operate and maintain their networks efficiently without being physically onsite. The job typically requires expertise in programming languages such as Python, Java, or C++, along with a strong understanding of networking principles.

What are some common challenges faced by remote network programmers, and how can these be effectively managed?

Remote network programmers often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting connectivity issues without on-site access, ensuring secure communication across distributed systems, and coordinating with team members in different time zones. Effective management of these challenges typically involves using robust remote debugging tools, adhering to security best practices like VPNs and encryption, and maintaining clear, consistent communication with colleagues through collaboration platforms. Proactively documenting code and network architecture also helps streamline remote teamwork and reduces misunderstandings.

Job description

Senior Infrastructure Projects Engineer

Boston, Massachusetts, United States; New York, United States; San Francisco, California, United States

Pliancy is fundamentally changing the way businesses value technology. We're on a mission to prove that the right technology (and the right technologists) can help accelerate progress toward radical, ambitious goals. Pliancy specializes in partnering with life sciences organizations, capital management firms, and emerging startups, providing IT support to bold leaders pushing science and technology forward.

Our employees and clients find that we're starkly different from other IT organizations because we challenge the status quo in two major ways: by putting people first in every decision we make, and by innovating towards simplicity every chance we get. As a people-first company that invests in the long-term success of our employees, we're looking for creative thinkers who like to solve interesting problems. We prioritize curiosity and empathy in all of our hiring decisions.

About the Role

We are looking for a Senior Infrastructure Projects Engineer to join our dynamic Infrastructure Projects team. This team is dedicated to managing a range of initiatives, from large-scale build-outs and relocation projects to targeted infrastructure service improvements.

As a client-facing engineer, you will regularly interact with C-suite stakeholders, translating complex technical concepts into clear, actionable communication, and expectation setting is imperative. The location options for this role are: Boston, CA Bay Area, or New York, with frequent local travel required within the greater region surrounding those areas. Occasional travel to other Pliancy hubs may be necessary.

What Is the Work Like?

Many of our clients are showing consistent growth. This manifests as a lot of movement into and out of office spaces. In both of our client verticals, we find ourselves:

  • Joining owner, architect, and contractor calls to work closely with construction teams and their subcontractors for pieces that impact low-voltage and audiovisual installations.
  • Designing, ordering, and implementing a full network stack (switching, firewalls, and wireless).
  • Partnering with internet service providers and working with them from site surveys to circuit activation.
  • Scoping and installing AV hardware for high-traffic conference rooms, executive suites, and hybrid collaboration spaces

There is a lot of on-site work, but there will be instances where you are doing various, remote value-add efforts (predictive wireless surveys, license renewals, maintenance, or post-installation support).

Who Are We Looking For?

Our ideal candidate has a strong technical background with a project manager's mindset. You are someone who finds as much satisfaction in an organized server rack and a flawlessly executed office move as you do in troubleshooting a complex routing issue. You are able to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. In addition to managing day-to-day operations, you will help play a key role in maintaining and continuously improving our standards. You are a "T-shaped" engineer: you possess expertise in Network Architecture (Layer 2/3) and Physical Infrastructure, supplemented by a broad understanding of the modern SaaS/IaaS and AV stacks. You don't just follow a project planโ€”you help build the standards that define how Pliancy executes infrastructure work.

Responsibilities
  • Manage and be accountable for the success of small to large-scale IT projects, such as office moves and network upgrades
  • Design and implement audio-visual solutions such as huddle spaces, conference rooms, and collaboration spaces
  • Collaborate with the Infrastructure Projects team and leads to develop and maintain project strategies and process creation within their scope
  • Work closely with both the team and client-facing consultants to design and implement best practices for project implementation
  • Create meaningful documentation to facilitate project hand-off to consultants
  • Act as the final technical escalation for complex Network and AV issues, ensuring high-touch resolution for critical client environments in partnership with the Consulting teams
Requirements

Should Have

  • Networking
    • Strong proficiency in designing and configuring a variety of full-stack networks (e.g., Cisco Meraki, FortiGate, Sonicwall, or Ubiquiti)
    • Deep understanding of Layer 2/3 (VLANs, STP, OSPF/BGP) and security (Firewalls, Site-to-Site VPNs, Client VPNs)
    • Experience with Wireless Predictive Modeling (using tools like Ekahau or Hamina) and post-install validation
  • Project & Site Management
    • Experience managing project lifecycles within tools like Monday.com, Asana, or Jira
    • Experience with new office construction, including working with architects, general contractors, and subcontractors
    • Experience with MDF/IDF closet design (cooling, power requirements, rack elevations)
  • AV & Collaboration
    • Experience with the Zoom platform (Rooms and end-user deployments)
    • Experience with the Microsoft Teams platform (Rooms and end-user deployments)
    • Experience with collaboration room hardware installations and integration (displays, cameras, speakers)
  • Systems & Operations
    • Solid understanding of Windows Server and on-premise server hardware/network infrastructure
    • Working knowledge of EntraID, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, and cloud-based storage (Egnyte, Box, Dropbox, etc.)
  • Physical
    • The ability to wear personal protective equipment correctly for up to a full working day when on an active job site
    • Ability to lift 50+ lbs, climb ladders, and perform installations in tight IDF closets or under conference tables.
    • The ability to move safely in confined spaces (networking closets, for example) and around active construction
  • Exceptional planning and organizational ability
  • Strong documentation and communication skills
  • Aptitude and desire to learn new technologies
  • Ability to teach and mentor others
  • Desire to research new products and technologies to improve the project lifecycle
  • Authorization to work in the USA for any employer

Nice to Have

  • Understanding of identity and access management (IAM) fundamentals (SSO, SAML, OAuth, etc.)
  • Experience with AV design for meeting and conference rooms
  • Experience interacting with and using REST APIs
  • Experience automating and orchestrating common tasks to drive efficiencies and innovation
Benefits
  • Salary: $110,000-130,000 per year, dependent on experience
  • Healthcare: Premiums for our base-level healthcare plan are 100% covered for employees and 50% covered for dependents, with the option to upgrade plus optional dental and vision plans
  • Company-funded HRA reimbursement account to help cover medical copays, deductibles, and coinsurance
  • Employer-funded commuter benefits and mileage reimbursement
  • 401(k) match offered to help you plan for your long-term future
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Paid leave for new parents, including adoptive parents, to support your family's growth
  • Employee stock options so you can share in Pliancy's success

Why work with us?

  • Community-minded, empathetic teammates who take pride in their workโ€”and make it fun, too
  • A manager who will help you grow and identify opportunities for career development
  • The opportunity to support clients solving challenging problems in pursuit of meaningful goals
  • Flexible schedule designed to empower your communication and time management skills
  • Benefits and perks built to meaningfully support you and your family
