The Remote Modeling Simulation Engineer focuses on creating and running simulations to predict system behaviors, often in engineering or manufacturing contexts. In contrast, the Remote Data Analyst interprets data to inform business decisions across various industries. While both roles require analytical skills and technical knowledge, their tools, applications, and industry focus differ significantly.

How does a Remote Modeling Simulation Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams despite working remotely?

Remote Modeling Simulation Engineers frequently work with multidisciplinary teams, including software developers, project managers, and subject matter experts. Collaboration is typically facilitated through virtual meetings, shared simulation platforms, and cloud-based project management tools. Regular communication and thorough documentation are essential to ensure alignment on project goals and simulation requirements. While remote work offers flexibility, it also requires proactive engagement to stay connected and effectively contribute to team-driven problem solving.

What are Remote Modeling Simulation Engineers?

Remote Modeling Simulation Engineers are professionals who use computer-based models and simulations to analyze, design, and optimize systems or products, often working from a location outside of a traditional office. They leverage specialized software to create virtual prototypes and run simulations, which helps in testing and improving designs without the need for physical experiments. These engineers collaborate with teams online, and their work is crucial in industries such as aerospace, automotive, energy, and manufacturing. Their remote setup allows companies to tap into a wider talent pool and offers professionals greater flexibility.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Modeling Simulation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Modeling Simulation Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering or computer science, strong mathematical modeling skills, and experience with simulation methodologies. Familiarity with tools like MATLAB, Simulink, Python, and simulation software, along with relevant certifications such as Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP), is often required. Exceptional problem-solving, self-motivation, and clear communication are crucial soft skills, especially when collaborating remotely with diverse teams. These skills ensure accurate model development, effective virtual teamwork, and the delivery of reliable simulation results for complex engineering challenges.

Job description

About Merlin:
Merlin is a venture backed aerospace startup building a non-human pilot to enable both reduced crew and uncrewed flight. Backed by some of the world's leading investors, Merlin is scaling alongside our customers to begin leveraging autonomy today to solve some of aviation's biggest challenges.
About you
We are seeking a Flight Dynamics Engineer to develop and integrate aircraft models within our simulation environment, supporting scalable and reusable modeling across multiple aircraft platforms.
This role focuses on building and refining aircraft models, contributing to structured modeling approaches, and ensuring models are usable within mission scenarios and simulation workflows. You will work closely with simulation platform and integration teams to bring aircraft models from concept to operational use in our virtual test environment.
This position supports both active aircraft programs and the long-term evolution of our flight dynamics capability.
This role plays a key role in enabling how aircraft behavior is represented and used across our simulation ecosystem. Your work will directly support autonomy development, system integration, and validation efforts across multiple aircraft platforms.
Responsibilities
  • Develop, improve, and update aircraft models that simulate aerodynamics, control systems, servos, brakes, landing gear, etc.
  • Support flight test planning, instrumentation requirements, and test data analysis to gather quality data for simulation development and validation.
  • Write software to support continuous improvements to our existing simulation.
  • Collaborate with virtual test environment users to ensure that their objectives are met.
  • Support expansion of our virtual test environment to include additional advancements needed to support our customers

Requirements
  • 5+ years of relevant experience working with aircraft dynamics and aircraft simulation
  • Proficiency in MATLAB and Simulink with some basic knowledge of C, C++, and python
  • An understanding of conventional aircraft simulation modeling techniques
  • Experience with flight test
  • Experience with aircraft certification
  • BS in Aerospace or Mechanical engineering

Nice to Have
  • MS/PhD in Aerospace Engineering focusing on aircraft flight dynamics
  • Experience integrating with AFSIM
  • Experience with Live, Virtual, Constructive simulation techniques and processes
  • Proficient in C, C++, and python
  • Experience setting up and flying simulators personally or professionally
  • Pilot's license or some flight experience

This position is based on-site at Merlin HQ in Boston, MA.
Once you're here, you'll enjoy a variety of on-site perks designed to make your workday enjoyable and convenient. These include catered lunches featuring a rotating menu of delicious options, an assortment of snacks to keep you fueled throughout the day, and a selection of beverages, including coffee, tea, and other drinks, to keep you refreshed.
