What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Computer Hardware Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Computer Hardware Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, computer architecture, and hardware design, typically supported by a relevant bachelor's degree. Familiarity with CAD tools (such as Altium Designer or AutoCAD), hardware description languages (like VHDL or Verilog), and version control systems is essential. Strong analytical thinking, self-motivation, and effective virtual communication skills set outstanding engineers apart in remote environments. These abilities ensure efficient hardware development, seamless collaboration with distributed teams, and the successful delivery of high-quality products.

What does a Remote Computer Hardware Engineer do?

A Remote Computer Hardware Engineer designs, develops, tests, and oversees the production and installation of computer hardware components such as processors, circuit boards, memory devices, and networks, all while working from a remote location. They collaborate with software developers, troubleshoot hardware issues, and ensure that devices function efficiently and reliably. Remote engineers use digital communication and collaboration tools to work with teams and clients, making it possible to contribute to projects without being onsite. Their role is critical in advancing computing technology and supporting the infrastructure behind modern digital systems.

Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding hardware design roles vs network setup rolesDistinguishing between hardware design and network management jobs

Remote Computer Hardware Engineers focus on designing and testing physical components of computers remotely, while Remote Network Engineers manage and troubleshoot network systems. Both roles require technical certifications and often work in tech or manufacturing industries, but their core responsibilities differ significantly.

How do Remote Computer Hardware Engineers effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams despite working offsite?

Remote Computer Hardware Engineers often work closely with design, software, and testing teams using collaboration tools like video conferencing, shared repositories, and project management platforms. Regular virtual meetings and clear documentation are key to maintaining alignment and ensuring that hardware specifications meet project goals. While physical prototyping may require shipping components or coordinating with on-site staff, most design and troubleshooting tasks can be handled remotely with simulation software and remote desktop access. Building strong communication habits is essential to overcome the challenges of physical distance and keep projects on schedule.

Job description

Why Flux
Flux is taking the hard out of hardware, by developing the first AI Hardware Engineer. Our goal is to democratize the ability to create bleeding edge hardware, and revolutionize how electronics are designed and built around the world.
The Role
Flux is building the world's first AI Hardware Engineer, and that means everything around it has to just work.
As a Platform Engineer, you'll work on the full-stack systems that power Flux's platform experience beyond the editor: billing, authentication, onboarding, and integrations.
You'll ship production features that touch every user, keep the lights on, and make it possible for Flux to scale.
What You'll Do
  • Build and maintain user-facing platform features (billing, auth, onboarding, settings).
  • Integrate and maintain third-party APIs (Stripe, Firebase, analytics).
  • Write TypeScript/Node backend services and React frontend components.
  • Improve reliability and performance of core platform flows.
  • Implement observability, logging, and error-tracking standards.
  • Collaborate across teams to design APIs that support new products and integrations.
  • Document architecture and best practices for your domain.
What You'll Bring
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Strong proficiency in TypeScript, Node.js, and React.
  • Experience integrating and maintaining 3rd party APIs.
  • Proven track record shipping production full-stack web apps.
  • Familiarity with cloud hosting (GCP/AWS/Firebase) and CI/CD basics.
  • Strong debugging and cross-system troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; thrives in async, remote teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with multi-tenant SaaS or collaborative web platforms.
  • Familiarity with auth frameworks (OAuth, JWT, Firebase Auth).
  • Exposure to observability stacks (Sentry, Datadog, Grafana).
  • Prior experience building internal tools or admin dashboards.
  • Startup or 0 → 1 product-building experience.

Profile
Impact-oriented: You don't feel done until real people are getting real value from what you built.
Ambiguity-native: You thrive in the undefined. Agentic development is full of half-mapped terrain, soft constraints, and ideas that shift under your feet. That energizes you. You constantly update your intuitions as you go, and are excited to discover new and better ways to attack challenges we're still finding words to describe.
Collaborative: You share your thoughts early and often, and welcome debate and creative collaboration. Flux is a deeply collaborative company, and we believe that the best ideas can only win if they're said out loud.
Convention-averse: Flux is an AI-first company. We constantly experiment with new workflows, tools, and ways of working together. You feel an urgency to reimagine how we create and collaborate in this rapidly changing world, and you value critical thinking far above established conventions.
Ownership mentality: You are a self-starter, bias toward action, and care deeply about the team and community who lean on you and your work.
Flux is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to providing equal employment opportunities to all qualified individuals and do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, gender identity, and sexual orientation), national origin, age, disability, genetic information, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by applicable federal, state, or local law. All employment decisions are based on qualifications, merit, and business need.
Pursuant to the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, we will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records.
