How much do recombinant protein jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 9, 2026, the average hourly pay for recombinant protein in the United States is $29.14, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $23.80 and $32.45 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are recombinant protein jobs?

Recombinant protein jobs involve the production, purification, and analysis of proteins that are generated through recombinant DNA technology. Professionals in this field typically work in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or research laboratories, using genetic engineering to express proteins in host systems such as bacteria, yeast, or mammalian cells. These roles may include tasks like cloning genes, optimizing protein expression, purifying proteins, and characterizing their structure and function for use in research, medicine, or industrial applications.

What are some common challenges faced by scientists working in recombinant protein production roles?

Professionals in recombinant protein production often encounter challenges such as optimizing expression systems to achieve high yield and purity, troubleshooting issues with protein solubility or stability, and ensuring reproducibility across batches. Additionally, they must carefully select appropriate host organisms and purification strategies based on the target protein's properties. Collaboration with downstream users, such as structural biologists or assay development teams, is also crucial to align production with end-use requirements and timelines.

What is the difference between Recombinant Protein vs Protein Purification Specialist?

AspectRecombinant ProteinProtein Purification Specialist
Required CredentialsBiochemistry, Molecular Biology degrees, lab certificationsBiochemistry, Molecular Biology degrees, lab certifications
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, biotech companies, pharmaceutical firmsResearch labs, biotech companies, pharmaceutical firms
Industry UsageDeveloping and producing recombinant proteins for research and therapeuticsIsolating and purifying proteins from biological samples

Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and work environments, often within biotech or pharmaceutical industries. However, Recombinant Protein specialists focus on designing and producing recombinant proteins, while Protein Purification Specialists concentrate on isolating and purifying proteins from biological sources. Understanding these differences helps clarify career paths and job expectations in the biotech industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Recombinant Protein Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Recombinant Protein Scientist, you need a strong background in molecular biology, protein biochemistry, and recombinant DNA technology, typically supported by a degree in biology, biochemistry, or a related field. Familiarity with technical tools such as PCR, chromatography systems, protein expression/purification platforms, and relevant software is essential, along with knowledge of GLP/GMP standards. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help you excel in complex research environments. These skills ensure reliable protein production, data integrity, and successful collaboration in scientific or biopharmaceutical settings.

Role Description:
We are seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Associate Scientist to join our High-Throughput Protein Production Laboratory. This role supports automation-driven workflows for recombinant protein generation using advanced liquid handling platforms. The successful candidate will contribute to large-scale, high-throughput protein production processes, including upstream handling, purification, and downstream analytical characterization.
This position operates in a highly process-driven environment where automation, aseptic technique, and robust sample tracking are critical. The ideal candidate is comfortable working with automated laboratory systems, possesses strong organizational skills, and has experience with laboratory data management platforms such as ELN, LIMS, or similar systems.
Key Responsibilities:
  1. Execute high-throughput protein production workflows using automated liquid handling systems (e.g., Lynx platform) in a reproducible and efficient manner.
  2. Operate and monitor automated protocols for processes including:
  3. Mammalian cell culture handling
  4. Protein purification workflows
  5. Sample aliquoting and distribution
  6. Perform laboratory operations under aseptic conditions to support recombinant protein expression and processing activities.
  7. Monitor automated runs and identify workflow deviations, ensuring adherence to established SOPs and quality standards.
  8. Manage high-throughput sample workflows, including sample tracking, plate mapping, labeling, and inventory control to ensure traceability and data integrity.
  9. Document experimental procedures and process parameters accurately in ELN, LIMS, or equivalent systems in compliance with data integrity requirements.
  10. Support maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of automation platforms and associated laboratory equipment.
