Radiation Physics Intern information

What does a Radiation Physics Intern do?

A Radiation Physics Intern assists experienced physicists in studying how radiation interacts with matter, often within medical, industrial, or research settings. Their typical tasks include helping with radiation safety procedures, calibrating equipment, analyzing data from experiments, and learning to operate radiation detection devices. Interns gain hands-on experience and foundational knowledge that prepares them for advanced study or careers in medical physics, health physics, or related fields.

What types of projects or tasks can a Radiation Physics Intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Radiation Physics Intern, you can expect to support senior physicists with tasks such as calibrating radiation detection equipment, analyzing data from experiments, and assisting with radiation safety audits. Interns often help prepare and set up experiments, collect and interpret measurements, and contribute to reports or presentations. The environment is typically collaborative, involving close work with both physicists and engineers, providing valuable hands-on experience and exposure to real-world applications of radiation physics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Radiation Physics Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Radiation Physics Intern, you need a solid background in physics or engineering, typically supported by coursework or a degree in a related field. Familiarity with radiation detection instruments, data analysis software (such as MATLAB or Python), and safety protocols is often expected. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help interns contribute to research and collaborate with experienced physicists. These skills ensure accurate data collection, safe work practices, and valuable contributions to radiation research and clinical projects.

  • Must be enrolled in the second of a two-year radiation therapy program accredited by the JRCERT (Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology).
  • Temporary license as a radiation therapist from the Oregon Board of Medical Imaging.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.

Additional information
  • Success in this role is supported by practical experience with linear accelerators, particularly Varian Truebeam and Edge systems, as well as GE Lightspeed CT simulators.
