Your Opportunity
The role of a Civil Engineer in Training in our Community Development Business Line is to work as a team member on projects under the close guidance and supervision of a senior engineer/designer. You will work closely with a project engineer to learn how best to assist the project manager and design team with land development permitting and site design. Over time, you will take on more responsibility and increasingly work directly with project managers. You will perform a variety of tasks which may include calculations and field work.
The position is ideal for entry level civil engineers as it will offer you exposure to a wide range of civil design principles including roadway, layout, utilities, drainage, and much more. Stantec also has a Developing Professionals Group (DPG) that has an active Sarasota chapter. DPG empowers employees to learn leadership skills early in their careers, to build peer networks, and to become more engaged with Stantec.
Your Key Responsibilities
  • Supports project team in development of design documentation, plans, and reports for relevant project design elements.
  • Prepares and revises documentation required for land development permitting through local, state and federal jurisdictions.
  • Performs quality reviews for documents in various project phases including construction plans, reviewing agency submittal packages, and engineering calculation reports.
  • Assist in preparing engineering calculation reports including but not limited to: stormwater design, potable water design, sanitary sewer design, and irrigation design.
  • Attends project coordination meetings with internal team members and/or external consultants.
  • Takes sufficient notes at all meetings in order to organize efforts and follow through with requested deliverables.
  • Coordinates and keeps consistent communication with other disciplines to ensure entire design team has same design intent and is on schedule.
  • Prepares and coordinates submittals to permitting entities.
  • Assists in the review of shop drawings and submittals, responds to request for information, prepares site observation reports, and performs other construction administration tasks.
  • Assists in the evaluation and selection of civil systems and materials.
  • Participates in value engineering and basic cost estimating.
  • Performs calculations to analyze and design civil system components using company standard software and proprietary manufacturer software.
  • Ready to step in and assist with any of design teams tasks in order to complete project on time and with quality design.

Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Self-starter with diligent work ethic and strong attention to detail
  • EI License not required, but desire to acquire EI license and PE license is preferred
  • Effective communication skills and ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought
  • Ability to visualize three-dimensional concepts and layouts from diagrams or drawings
  • Takes initiative on tasks and in coordinating with other members of the design team
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, and willingness to learn relevant software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, GIS, StormCAD, WaterCAD, StormWise (ICPR4), etc.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering. No prior experience required. EI License not required, but desire to acquire EI license and PE license is preferred.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
