How much do postdoctoral for nanoparticle jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 9, 2026, the average yearly pay for postdoctoral for nanoparticle in the United States is $59,022.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $49,000.00 and $66,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Nanoparticles, and why are they important?

To excel as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Nanoparticles, you need a Ph.D. in chemistry, materials science, or a related field, with deep expertise in nanoparticle synthesis and characterization. Familiarity with advanced instrumentation such as TEM, SEM, XRD, and analytical software, as well as experience with laboratory safety protocols, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective scientific communication help you stand out in team-based and interdisciplinary research environments. These skills ensure rigorous, innovative research and successful project outcomes in a highly competitive scientific field.

What is a Postdoctoral Fellow in Nanoparticles?

A Postdoctoral Fellow in Nanoparticles is a researcher who has completed their doctoral degree (PhD) and is engaged in advanced research focused on nanoparticles, which are particles sized between 1 and 100 nanometers. These positions are typically temporary and allow scientists to deepen their expertise, publish research, and develop new techniques in nanoparticle synthesis, characterization, and applications. Postdoctoral fellows often work in academic, research institute, or industrial laboratory settings, collaborating with other scientists on projects ranging from drug delivery systems to materials science innovations.

What are some common collaborative projects a Postdoctoral Researcher working on nanoparticles might engage in within a multidisciplinary team?

Postdoctoral researchers specializing in nanoparticles often collaborate with chemists, physicists, biologists, and engineers on projects such as drug delivery systems, imaging agents, or materials design. These collaborations frequently involve coordinating experiments, sharing data, and integrating diverse expertise to solve complex problems. Teamwork is essential, as projects often require combining knowledge of nanoparticle synthesis, characterization, and application. Effective communication and adaptability are crucial for navigating the fast-paced, interdisciplinary environment.

Job description

The Materials Science Division (MSD) at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a postdoctoral appointee to join the Nanoscale Magnetic and Electronic Heterostructures group. This position will focus on understanding novel and emergent behavior in nanoscale magnetic heterostructures, particularly in confined 2D van der Waals magnets and related devices. The goal of the program is to study and control magnetic domains such as nontrivial skyrmions, using external stimuli (e.g., optical excitations, electric and magnetic fields) and internal nanoscale heterogeneity, defects, and interfaces (e.g., twisting heterostructures). Correlating the magnetic domain behavior with microstructure/composition will enable the local energy landscape of the nanostructures to be determined. The successful candidate will primarily leverage state-of-the-art in-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM), including Lorentz TEM, and will have the opportunity to utilize other advanced techniques, such as ultrafast electron microscopy, magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) microscopy, and scanning NV microscopy. This position will also involve preparing suitable samples and devices using 2D material transfer systems and nanofabrication methods in the cleanroom at the Center for Nanoscale Materials. The candidate will work in a collaborative environment including a network of leading researchers.
Position Requirements
  • Recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD with strong background in Materials Science or Physics (within the last 5 years)
  • Considerable experience in understanding magnetic-domain physics in thin film and/or nanostructured materials.
  • Experience with TEM, including Lorentz TEM and in-situ cryo experiments.
  • Experience with nanofabrication (e.g., focused ion beam, electron-beam lithography and photolithography), transport measurements and thin film deposition is preferred.
  • Advanced image processing and analysis skills.
  • Experience with micromagnetic simulation is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.

Please upload the following as attachments to your application via Workday:
  • CV/Resume
  • Unofficial Ph.D. Transcripts
  • If already awarded, a copy of your Ph.D. diploma. Candidates can be currently enrolled to apply, but must have proof of degree conferral by the position start date.

At the point of interview, candidates will be asked to submit the name/contact of three references.
