Postdoc Cognitive Science Vr and Postdoc Neuroscience Vr both require a PhD in their respective fields and involve research in virtual reality environments. The main difference lies in their focus: cognitive science emphasizes understanding mental processes, while neuroscience concentrates on brain functions. Both roles are found in academic and research settings, often utilizing VR technology for experimental purposes.

What are Postdoc Cognitive Science VR positions?

Postdoc Cognitive Science VR positions are research-focused roles for individuals who have recently earned a PhD and wish to further their expertise in cognitive science using virtual reality (VR) technologies. These positions typically involve designing and conducting experiments, analyzing data, and publishing research that explores how people perceive, learn, and interact in virtual environments. Postdocs in this field may work in academic, industry, or interdisciplinary settings, collaborating with teams to advance knowledge in cognitive processes such as perception, memory, or decision-making using VR tools. The role often serves as a stepping stone to faculty positions or advanced research careers.

What are some common challenges faced by postdocs working in cognitive science with a focus on virtual reality (VR) research?

Postdocs in cognitive science VR research often face challenges related to the interdisciplinary nature of the work, requiring knowledge of psychology, neuroscience, computer science, and VR technology. Balancing experimental design with technical implementation can be demanding, as it may involve programming VR environments and troubleshooting hardware or software issues. Additionally, collaborating with experts from different fields and effectively communicating research findings to both technical and non-technical audiences are essential aspects of success. Time management is also critical, as postdocs typically juggle multiple projects, publications, and potential grant applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Postdoc in Cognitive Science with a focus on Virtual Reality (VR), and why are they important?

To excel as a Postdoc in Cognitive Science with a VR focus, you typically need a PhD in cognitive science, psychology, neuroscience, or a related field, with strong research and analytical skills. Familiarity with VR development platforms (such as Unity or Unreal Engine), programming languages (like Python or C#), and experience in experimental design and data analysis tools is often required. Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities help in presenting research and working effectively with interdisciplinary teams. These competencies are crucial for advancing innovative research, publishing findings, and contributing to advancements in both cognitive science and VR technology.

Job description

Department Overview

A postdoctoral researcher position is available in the Division of Informatics, Clinical Epidemiology and Translational Data Science (DICE) in the OHSU Department of Medicine. The Medical Informatics Training Grant (T15) is funded by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and supports learning and research in biomedical informatics and data science. OHSU is one of 16 educational institutions in the United States offering an educational curriculum funded by the T15 grant. By providing a structured research experience under faculty mentorship, the program prepares postdoctoral fellows to undertake independent biomedical informatics research in the academic community or to assume leadership positions in a growing number of hospital and/or commercial efforts in biomedical informatics.

Fellows engage in a rigorous and dynamic program of study - though they survey the field broadly during their fellowship, they also focus on and complete a significant research project that is presented in both oral and written form. The core competency of graduates from the OHSU NLM training program is to use informatics theory and applications to conduct research that utilizes data, information and IT to improve individual health, health care, public health, and/or biomedical research. In addition, graduates should be able to make scientific contributions to fields related to informatics, including, but not limited to, medicine, nursing, public health, other health professions, computer science, data science, library and information science, cognitive science, and organizational and management science.

The postdoctoral fellow will be mentored by the T15 Program Director, Dr. Vishnu Mohan, or his designate.

Initial appointment is for one year; the opportunity to extend by another year will be dependent on successful renewal of the T15 grant. All postdoctoral positions are customized to the level of experience of the trainee and the programmatic work expected of them.
