Job description

Remote | Part-Time | 8–20 hours per week
Overview
Support After Abortion is seeking a compassionate, reliable, and emotionally steady After Abortion Support Specialist to provide direct support to people reaching out through the After Abortion Line. Your dedication will make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals struggling emotionally after abortion. You will be a vital part of a supportive environment that values clarity, transparency, and client-centered service, ensuring every person feels heard, respected, and supported during a sensitive time.

The right person for this role is a strong written communicator, a careful listener, and someone who can respond to sensitive conversations with warmth, patience, empathy, and professionalism.
This role is primarily text, email, live chat, and occasional phone support. Clients may be experiencing grief, guilt, shame, regret, anger, confusion, relief, numbness, isolation, or mixed emotions after abortion. Some know exactly what kind of support they want. Others simply know they are hurting and need a safe place to start.
This is not a counseling role, crisis line, political advocacy role, or religious counseling role. Our work is client-led and nonjudgmental. We listen, reflect what the client is sharing, offer compassionate support, and help connect them with appropriate resources and next steps.
Responsibilities
* Respond to clients through text, email, live chat, and phone calls
* Provide compassionate, nonjudgmental support to people impacted by abortion
* Read client messages carefully and identify emotionally significant details, concerns, and support needs

* Reflect and validate what clients share without rushing to fix, advise, persuade, or share personal stories
* Ask thoughtful, client-centered follow-up questions without pressuring clients to explain more than they are ready to share
* Help connect clients with support options, resources, or referrals based on their needs and preferences
* Document client interactions clearly and accurately while maintaining confidentiality
* Complete follow-up tasks and maintain timely communication
* Follow established communication guidelines, boundaries, protocols, and escalation procedures
* Participate in training, feedback, and ongoing skill development
* Collaborate with team members to ensure consistent, high-quality client support

Skills and Qualifications
* Strong written communication skills, especially in emotionally sensitive conversations
* Warm, empathetic, and nonjudgmental communication style
* Ability to stay calm and steady when clients express grief, shame, anger, panic, trauma, or uncertainty
* Strong active listening skills and attention to detail
* Ability to respect each client’s own words, beliefs, values, and pace
* Comfort working remotely and managing tasks independently
* Strong organization, responsiveness, documentation, and follow-through
* Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries
* Openness to feedback and willingness to follow a specific support model
* Basic computer skills and comfort using online systems, email, chat, and documentation tools
* Bilingual English/Spanish skills strongly preferred
Helpful Experience
Helpful backgrounds may include support line work, peer support, client communication, case management, social services, healthcare, behavioral health, customer service, client advocacy, or other roles involving sensitive conversations and follow-up.
Previous experience is valuable, but the most important qualities for this role are emotional steadiness, strong written communication, compassion, reliability, and willingness to be trained in Support After Abortion’s client-centered support model.
This Role May Be a Good Fit If You
* Are comfortable supporting people through complex emotions without trying to fix everything
* Read carefully and notice the emotionally significant details in what someone shares
* Can reflect and validate a person’s experience without adding assumptions, advice, or your own story
* Can communicate warmth and care in writing

* Can balance emotional support with documentation, follow-up, and task completion

* Know how to ask thoughtful follow-up questions without interrogating or overwhelming someone
* Can follow a support model, receive feedback, and adjust your communication style
* Understand that sometimes the most helpful response is not a solution, but a clear reflection of what the person is carrying and an appropriate next step
Schedule
This is a part-time remote position, typically 8–20 hours per week. Hours are scheduled based on line coverage needs, so candidates must have availability during weekday business hours.
Benefits
* Remote work
* On-the-job training
* Meaningful, mission-driven work
* Supportive team environment
