Job description

Summary

The Biology Department at Barry University is currently accepting applications for Laboratory Teacher Assistants. This is a part-time student-employee position at the main campus and placement is contingent upon courses meeting 15 student minimum. This position is to be performed in person.

The Laboratory Teaching Assistant must be an upper-level undergraduate or graduate science major, who has exhibited outstanding competency and/or experience in their content areas. They will provide administrative and instructional support to faculty members and students. Duties will include: assisting with lab preparations/cleanup, grading, and holding open labs/review sessions outside of the scheduled lab time. Must have earned an "A" or "B" grade in the subject area.Positions are assigned for a variety of lab courses including but not limited to:Anatomy, Physiology, Cell Biology, Genetics, General Biology I and II, Microbiology, Botany, and Zoology.

Essential Functions

Setting up the laboratory for each class exercise, including organization and distribution of equipment, supplies, and handouts

  • Cleaning, organizing, and proper disposal of chemicals and biohazardous waste in the lab following class.

  • Maintaining an inventory of required laboratory supplies for specific courses by communicating with the Instructor, Lab Director, Lab Manager, and Operations Manager as needed.

  • Attending training programs in which Teaching Assistants learn lab protocol, safety, and apply teaching theory.

  • Possibly running the laboratory in-person for an instructor who is teaching the course remotely. This includes setting up, turning on, and connecting any devices required for remote delivery in the classroom/laboratory.

  • Troubleshooting any problems with said devices and seeking help from IT when necessary.

Provides administrative and teaching support to instructors by

  • Discussing and planning lessons with professors.

  • Attending scheduled class times to assist with conducting lab activities.

  • Proctoring exams and assisting with grading as necessary.

  • Preparing a recitation of procedures, experimental objectives, background of applicable topics, and discussion of processes that may occur during a laboratory exercise.

  • Possibly assisting the instructor with remote delivery of the lab.

  • Timely and accurate submittal of new hire paperwork and hourly time tracking (clock-in/clock-out) in Workday.

Communicates effectively and professionally with students to assist them with the successful completion of their laboratory exercises by

  • Acting as a classroom aide and assisting/supervising students with their lab work (in-person).

  • Planning and/or facilitating open lab sessions outside of the normally scheduled lab time (in-person).

  • Assisting with or leading review sessions during and/or outside of the normally scheduled lab time (in-person).

  • Maintaining sign in sheets and logs of these session

  • Arranging for coverage during absence.

Qualifications/Requirements
  • Must be a current Barry University student.

  • Must have earned an "A" or "B" grade in the subject area.

  • Basic computer skills

  • This position requires the employee to physically report to campus and the classroom (in-person) to assist the instructor with the class. The instructor may be teaching the course remotely, but the teaching assistant must be able to facilitate the lab in a face-to-face format.

  • Experience communicating via electronic mail.
