What are common challenges faced by Nvidia Thermal Engineers when designing cooling solutions for high-performance GPUs?

Nvidia Thermal Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing heat dissipation in increasingly compact device designs, ensuring reliable thermal performance across varying workloads, and balancing cooling efficiency with noise and power constraints. They must collaborate closely with hardware, mechanical, and electrical engineers to integrate thermal solutions without compromising system performance or manufacturability. Staying updated with new materials and cooling technologies is essential to address these evolving demands and to optimize for both current and future GPU architectures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Nvidia Thermal Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Nvidia Thermal Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or thermal engineering, with expertise in heat transfer, thermodynamics, and often a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation tools such as ANSYS, FloTHERM, and CFD software, as well as hands-on experience with thermal measurement systems, is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating across multidisciplinary teams and addressing complex thermal challenges. These skills ensure that Nvidia products meet strict thermal performance and reliability standards, which is vital for product efficiency and user satisfaction.

What is the difference between Nvidia Thermal Engineer vs Nvidia Hardware Test Engineer?

AspectNvidia Thermal EngineerNvidia Hardware Test Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in Mechanical, Electrical, or Thermal EngineeringBachelor's/Master's in Electrical, Computer Engineering, or related fields
Work EnvironmentDesigning and testing thermal solutions, working in labs and R&DTesting hardware components, working in labs and quality assurance
Industry UsageFocus on thermal management of GPUs and chipsFocus on hardware functionality and performance testing

While Nvidia Thermal Engineers specialize in thermal management and cooling solutions for Nvidia products, Nvidia Hardware Test Engineers focus on testing hardware components for performance and reliability. Both roles require technical expertise and work in lab environments, but their core responsibilities differ significantly.

Job description

Join NVIDIA as a Senior System Mechanical Engineer and help build the systems powering the future of AI and accelerated computing!

In this role, you'll work alongside a collaborative, high-performing team pushing the boundaries of hardware innovation. Based in Santa Clara, CA, you will lead the development of mechanical systems for GPU and LPU-based AI infrastructure-from early concept through production-driving improvements in chassis design, thermal performance, and system integration. This is an opportunity to shape product direction, deliver high-quality solutions at scale, and make a meaningful impact on technologies used around the world.

What you'll be doing:

  • Lead the end-to-end design and development of mechanical systems for AI and high-performance computing platforms.

  • Translate product requirements into practical, scalable mechanical designs that meet performance, reliability, and cost goals.

  • Design and improve server chassis and compute platforms, focusing on cooling, serviceability, and usability.

  • Partner with electrical and thermal teams to analyze and improve system performance, using simulation and test data to guide decisions.

  • Collaborate with suppliers and manufacturing partners to drive design-for-manufacture (DFM) and smooth production ramp.

  • Build, test, and troubleshoot prototypes, leading validation efforts and root cause analysis to improve product quality.

What we need to see:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience); MS/PhD preferred.

  • 6+ years of experience designing mechanical systems for servers, datacenter hardware, or similar products.

  • Proficiency in CAD tools (Creo preferred, SolidWorks, NX) and strong skills in modeling and defining engineering drawing requirements.

  • Knowledge of thermal and structural analysis methods to guide design decisions.

  • Knowledge of common manufacturing processes, including sheet metal, machining, plastics, and assembly methods.

  • Experience conducting tolerance analysis.

  • Experience working with electronic components and system integration, including boards, connectors, and cooling solutions.

  • Hands-on approach with the ability to debug and solve problems in lab and production environments.

Ways to stand out from the crowd:

  • Experience designing AI, GPU, or high-performance computing systems and a track record of improving product quality, cost, or manufacturing efficiency.

  • Familiarity with rack-level systems or datacenter deployment environments and experience delivering products from early development through high-volume production.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple project tasks and support project schedules.

  • Strong collaboration skills and ability to work effectively across teams.
