Summary/Objective
Our Construction Inspection team operates statewide, serving as the Department's on-site representatives. We ensure that all capital improvement infrastructure projects meet contract requirements, maintain high construction quality standards, and uphold stringent safety practices.
Essential Job Duties
  • Represent the Department on statewide contracted construction projects involving the expenditure of capital improvement funds.
  • Perform material testing in compliance with documented standards.
  • Perform inspections to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Maintain contract documents and communications with contractors.
  • Compute pay item quantities when making out monthly pay estimates.
  • Manage requests for information, change orders, change proposals, and forced account work.
  • Operate Nuclear Density Gauges.
  • Certify as Concrete Field Technician-Grade 1.
  • Become certified as a Concrete Strength Testing Technician.
  • Provide technical assistance to engineering staff.
  • Maintain a daily construction log and "As Built" drawings of contractual work events.
  • Submit daily construction reports using laptops, tablets, smartphones, and computers.
  • Travel extensively throughout the state.
  • Absent from home for extended periods of time.
  • Work various hours, including Saturdays, Sundays, and legal holidays.
  • Operate survey equipment commonly used to verify elevations or reading grades.
  • Calculate material, equipment, labor, and excavation quantities.

Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED/HiSET required.
  • Six (6) years construction experience, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
  • Must maintain a valid, current driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to read and interpret designs for construction and correlate to project specifications.
  • Ability to be highly organized while performing multiple projects.
  • Ability to perform multiple assignments which may require considerable exercise of independent judgement.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and act quickly and decisively on the determined course of action.
  • Excellent communications skills to communicate between engineers, contractors and contract superintendents, area managers, landowners, county officials and the general public through both oral and written form.
  • Knowledge of project management principles and methods.
  • Ability to build and sustain positive working relationships.
  • Ability to work under stress for prolonged periods of time.

Work Environment
  • Regularly required to work in outdoor environments where wet, hot, cold and/or humid conditions exist.
  • Frequently exposed to loud noises which may require the use of hearing protection.

Physical Abilities
  • Operate and relocate heavy equipment and power tools.
  • Operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.
  • Frequently communicate and exchange accurate information.
  • Clarity of vision, three-dimensional vision, and the ability to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Regularly lift up to 20 pounds, correctly lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Concentrated attention is required at all times.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
