Marines and Army Soldiers both serve in the U.S. military but differ in their training, deployment environments, and operational focus. Marines are known for their expeditionary and amphibious roles, often operating in combat zones and on ships. Army Soldiers have a broader range of roles, including land-based combat, support, and logistical functions across diverse environments. Both require similar basic credentials but serve different strategic purposes within the U.S. military.

What are Marines?

Marines are members of a military branch trained for rapid deployment and specialized in amphibious operations. They serve as an elite force within a country's armed forces, often the first to respond to crises and conflicts around the world. In the United States, for example, the Marine Corps operates as a separate branch under the Department of the Navy. Marines undergo rigorous training in combat, leadership, and specialized skills, making them adept at a wide range of military missions. Their primary role is to serve as expeditionary forces, capable of launching assaults from the sea and securing key positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Marine, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Marine, you need physical fitness, discipline, teamwork, and a high school diploma or equivalent, along with successful completion of Marine Corps training. Familiarity with weapons systems, tactical communication devices, and completion of specialized courses or certifications such as marksmanship are typically required. Leadership, resilience, and the ability to perform under pressure are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies are vital to ensure operational effectiveness, mission success, and the safety of all unit members in challenging environments.

What are some common challenges Marines face during their first year of service?

During their first year, Marines often face challenges such as adapting to the disciplined military lifestyle, meeting high physical and mental standards, and learning to work as part of a close-knit team under pressure. New Marines must quickly master essential skills, follow strict routines, and adjust to being away from home. The support of experienced leaders and fellow Marines, along with structured training, helps ease this transition and sets the foundation for future success in the Corps.

Job description

Description:

Are you looking to take the next steps in your career as a Business Development and Capture Lead for US DoD? Let's chat and see if we are a good match!

Opportunity:

We are looking for an experienced business and relationship development professional to join our team and continue the outpaced growth we are seeing in our Defense business. The right professional will love developing relationships with technical and mission leaders inside the DOD and will have a track record of success in developing these relationships and closing significant business. We are looking for somebody that understands the secure environments, can sell into the secure environments and has a strong acumen for cloud and cyber based solutions. While years of experience are not the driving factor we would expect somebody in this role who has spent a significant amount of time inside the Air Force, Space Force, Navy, Marines, or Army. This person would understand how to navigate programs, DoD environments, work with partners, be collaborative inside the VSO team and help to develop structured opportunities for capture. We value self-starters with a competitive edge and a love for engaging people.

Preference will be given to experience and relationships in the Air Force, Navy, Marines or Space Force.

The Mission:

We are seeking a high-caliber Business Development and Capture Lead to fuel the continued exponential growth of our Defense portfolio. This isn't a role for a spectator; itโ€™s for a closer who thrives at the intersection of mission-critical technology and strategic relationship building. You will be responsible for identifying, qualifying, and winning large-scale opportunities within the DoD, specifically focusing on Cloud, Cyber, and Secure Services solutions.

Proven Experience & Key Results:

The ideal candidate doesn't just "understand" the DoW; they have a documented history of navigating its complexities to deliver hardware, software, or services. We are looking for:

  • A Proven Closer: A track record of leading capture efforts for programs ranging from $10M to $100M, with a high "win rate" on competitive solicitations.
  • Mission Depth: Extensive experience (typically 10+ years) operating within or selling directly to the Air Force, Space Force, Navy, or Marines. You should know the difference between a requirement and a "nice-to-have" before the RFP is even drafted.
  • Technical Sales Acumen: Demonstrated success selling Cloud (IL5/IL6) and Cybersecurity solutions. You can bridge the gap between a Generalโ€™s mission requirements and a CTOโ€™s technical architecture.
  • Network Intelligence: An existing, "warm" network of technical and mission leaders (PEOs, PMs, and Senior Executives) who trust your judgment and expertise.
  • Strategic Capture Mastery: Experience managing the full capture lifecycleโ€”from initial market intelligence and gate reviews to final proposal submission and post-award growth.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Drive Revenue Growth: Exceed annual booking and revenue targets by identifying high-probability targets within the DoD.
  • Navigate the DoW: Masterfully navigate the POM cycle, various funding vehicles (OTA, FAR-based, Mid-Tier Acquisition), and complex security requirements.
  • Partner Ecosystem Management: Collaborate with systems integrators (GSIs), boutique firms, and internal VSO teams to build winning "team-prime" or "team-sub" configurations.
  • Market Influence: Act as a thought leader at industry days and conferences, positioning our brand as the premier choice for secure cloud and cyber innovation.

Who You Are:

  • A Self-Starter: You donโ€™t wait for a lead; you hunt. You have a competitive edge that drives you to beat the competition to the "X."
  • Collaborative Warrior: You win as a team. You know how to leverage internal technical resources to build a bulletproof value proposition.
  • Clearance: Must possess (or be able to obtain) a high-level security clearance (TS/SCI preferred).
Requirements:
  • Must be located in Northern Virginia and willing to work on-site in a hybrid capacity
  • Must possess (or be able to obtain) a high-level security clearance (TS/SCI preferred)
  • Please note that pursuant to a government contract, this specific position requires U.S. citizenship status
  • While years of experience are not the driving factor we would expect somebody in this role who has spent a significant amount of time inside the Air Force, Space Force, Navy, Marines, or Army. This person would understand how to navigate programs, DoD environments, work with partners, be collaborative inside the VSO team and help to develop structured opportunities for capture. We value self-starters with a competitive edge and a love for engaging people.
  • Preference will be given to experience and relationships in the Air Force, Navy, Marines or Space Force.

What is Important to Us:

  • You are an excellent communicator in writing and speaking.
  • You have the ability to work independently but also value teamwork.
  • Your problem-solving skills are excellent.
  • You are looking for a job where performance appraisals occur regularly, and you look forward to advancing your career.
  • You seek a community of virtue-centered co-workers and clients.

What we offer you:

As part of the VSO company, you will be part of a virtue-centered team who value their work and teammates. This is a no-jerk zone. We provide ongoing learning and development opportunities to foster continuous growth. We offer competitive salaries, health benefits, and flexible work arrangements.
