Receives intensive classroom and field training in principles, practices, procedures and techniques of police work which prepares the recruit to perform the duties of a police officer including the detection, apprehension and arrest of suspects and use of firearms. Recruits are also required to pass a rigorous fitness testing program. Must be able to work irregular hours, holidays, shift and weekend work. Exposure to hazardous and obnoxious conditions.
After 12 months of satisfactory service as a Metropolitan Police Recruit, recruits are eligible to become a Metropolitan Police Officer, $6,270 per month (PO-07, Step A), plus $658.67 per month, Standard of Conduct Differential.
Examination Process
Applicants need to be prepared to begin processing within one (1) month of submitting their application. The selection process varies based on applicant availability. Applicants who are not available for employment within the next 5-8 months should wait to apply.
ENTRY LEVEL POLICE EXAMINATION

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be contacted by HPD via email with additional information and instructions to self-schedule for an entrance exam. Applicants need to schedule the entrance exam within one (1) month of submitting their application. HPD will administer exams on a regular basis; once invited to self-schedule, please monitor the registration site for exam dates.
Applicants will have two (2) hours to complete the entrance exam which contains 169 multiple-choice questions throughout the following sections: Observation and memory, written communication, reading/understanding, and reasoning/analytical ability and bio-data. HPD will notify applicants of their entrance exam results via email.
PHYSICAL READINESS ASSESSMENT (PRA)
Applicants who pass the entrance exam will be notified via email to self-schedule for the PRA. Applicants must schedule the PRA within one (1) month after being invited. All events must be passed in order to continue in the selection process.

  • 1.5-Mile Run - 21 minutes
Applicants who pass the PRA will continue through HPD's internal selection process which includes completing a online Personal History Statement (PHS), Background Investigation, Clarification Interview, Psychological Examination/Interview, Polygraph Examination and Medical Examination. Minimum Qualification Requirements
At the time of application, applicants must meet the following:
  • 20 years of age (21 years of age by graduation from the Police Academy)
  • High School Diploma or General Educational Diploma (GED)
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license (type 3/automobile)
  • US Citizen, US National, or Legal Permanent Resident (green card holder)
  • Must be able to meet Federal and State eligibility requirements to possess firearms (no felony convictions; no misdemeanor convictions for domestic violence, other violent crimes, or illegal drug sales).
