How much do magnetic particle jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 9, 2026, the average hourly pay for magnetic particle in the United States is $18.66, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $17.31 and $18.27 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges Magnetic Particle Inspectors face during inspections, and how can they overcome them?

Magnetic Particle Inspectors often encounter challenges such as interpreting ambiguous indications, working in confined or awkward spaces, and ensuring proper surface preparation. To overcome these, inspectors should stay up-to-date with training, follow standardized testing procedures, and maintain clear communication with team members and supervisors. Attention to detail and careful documentation are also crucial for accurate results and maintaining safety and quality standards.

What are Magnetic Particle Inspectors?

Magnetic Particle Inspectors are professionals who use magnetic particle testing (MT) to detect surface and near-surface flaws in ferromagnetic materials like iron, steel, and nickel alloys. They apply a magnetic field to the part and then apply ferrous particles to the surface; any discontinuities, such as cracks or seams, cause a leakage field that attracts the particles, making flaws visible. This non-destructive testing method is commonly used in industries like aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing to ensure the integrity and safety of metal components.

What is the difference between Magnetic Particle vs Radiographic Technician?

AspectMagnetic ParticleRadiographic Technician
CertificationsLevel I/II Magnetic Particle CertificationLevel I/II Radiography Certification
Work EnvironmentNon-destructive testing on ferromagnetic materialsNon-destructive testing using X-ray or gamma rays
Industry UsageManufacturing, aerospace, power plantsManufacturing, aerospace, oil & gas
Tools & TechniquesMagnetic fields, iron particlesX-ray equipment, film or digital detectors

Both Magnetic Particle and Radiographic Technician roles involve non-destructive testing to detect flaws. Magnetic Particle testing uses magnetic fields and iron particles to find surface and near-surface defects in ferromagnetic materials, while Radiographic Technicians use X-ray or gamma-ray imaging to inspect internal structures. Certifications for both are similar, and they often work in similar industries, but their methods and tools differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Magnetic Particle Testing Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Magnetic Particle Testing Technician, you need a solid understanding of non-destructive testing (NDT) methods, attention to detail, and often a certification such as ASNT Level I or II in Magnetic Particle Testing. Familiarity with magnetic particle inspection equipment, ultraviolet lighting, and relevant safety protocols is essential. Strong analytical skills, communication, and the ability to follow precise procedures help technicians excel in this role. These skills ensure accurate detection of material defects, contributing to safety and reliability in manufacturing and construction industries.
