To thrive as an LPC Candidate, you need a master’s degree in counseling or a related field, foundational knowledge in mental health assessment, and eligibility for state supervision. Familiarity with electronic health records, diagnostic tools like the DSM-5, and any required state licensing exams or documentation systems is essential. What is the difference between Lpc Candidate vs Licensed Professional Counselor?

AspectLpc CandidateLicensed Professional Counselor
CredentialsRequires completing supervised hours and passing the examMust have completed all licensing requirements, including supervision and exam
Work EnvironmentInternships, supervised settings, entry-level rolesIndependent practice, full licensure, broader responsibilities
Industry UsageCommonly searched during licensing processUsed after full licensure is obtained

The main difference between an Lpc Candidate and a Licensed Professional Counselor is that the candidate is still completing licensing requirements, such as supervised hours, while the licensed counselor has fulfilled all requirements and can practice independently.

What is an LPC Candidate?

An LPC Candidate is an individual who has completed the necessary educational requirements for licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) but is still accruing the supervised experience required for full licensure. During this time, LPC Candidates work under the supervision of a licensed counselor to gain practical experience in the field. This status allows them to provide counseling services while they complete their state's required hours of supervision and pass any necessary licensing exams.

What types of supervision and mentorship can an LPC Candidate expect during their licensure process?

As an LPC Candidate, you will typically be required to work under the supervision of a licensed professional counselor (LPC) who provides regular guidance, feedback, and support. Supervision often involves weekly or bi-weekly meetings to discuss client cases, ethical considerations, and professional development. This structured mentorship helps you gain practical experience, navigate complex client situations, and build confidence in your counseling skills. The process also ensures you meet the required clinical hours and competencies for full licensure.
