Job description

Library Assistant

Under the supervision of the Library's Youth Services Manager or Library Aide, performs sorting and shelving library materials, recycling newspapers, and limited mail responsibilities. Employees work under direct supervision, although they may operate with some independence once procedures are learned, with only occasional checks for adherence to prescribed standards; and performs other duties as assigned.

Job Duties
  • Provide customer service and assist patrons.
  • Clean CDs, DVDs and books.
  • Identify need for repairs to materials.
  • Re-shelve materials.
  • Read shelves for accuracy.
  • Shift collections.
  • Perform closing procedures.
  • Prepare mail for distribution.
  • Run errands.
  • Participate in the City's intercultural competency training program.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the purpose and function of public libraries; and of diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Possession of strong organizational skills; skill with filing items both alphabetically and numerically; and effective and efficient verbal and written communications skills.
  • Ability to handle information with discretion and confidentiality; to learn routine library procedures; relate to, work pleasantly with and communicate effectively with co-workers and the public; follow oral and written instructions; perform duties such as shelving materials, maintain the organization of the collection and orderliness of public areas by returning materials to their proper locations; and monitor tables, countertops and placement of small furniture.
  • Ability to work without direct supervision; and to initiate independent work with minimal direction and completing tasks in a timely manner.
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 15 years of age or older.
  • Selection for hire is dependent upon the ability to complete and pass a library shelving exercise.

PREFERRRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Library experience and/or knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System.
  • Previous Library experience
Supplemental Information

WORKING CONDITIONS: Duties require extensive standing, walking, crouching, squatting, climbing stairs and lifting; bending, lifting and stooping; lifting and carrying boxes or other objects weighing 25-30 lbs. (unassisted or assisted); and pushing carts weighing up to 50 lbs.
