Job description

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

1. Bachelor of Science degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution is required which includes at least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, include either 24 semester hours of Medical Laboratory Science courses, or 24 hours of science courses that include 6 hours of chemistry, 6 hours of biology, and 12 hours of chemistry, biology, or Medical Laboratory Science courses in any combination. Individuals who have degrees from foreign institutions must have an evaluation of their credentials to determine the equivalency of their education obtained in the United States. The equivalency evaluations should be on a course-by-course basis.

2. Associate of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Technology with MLS certification with ASCP, AMT, or AAB, and at least 5 years of laboratory management or supervisory experience.

Experience โ€“ Two (2) years of pertinent full-time as an MT/MLS is preferred but not required.

Licenses & Certification โ€“ Valid certification/registration with ASCP or AMT, is preferred, but not required.

Knowledge & Skills โ€“

  1. Knowledge and ability in mathematical, computer, reasoning, and language skills at the college level.
  2. Knowledge and ability for implementing all standard laboratory policies and procedures.
  3. Knowledge and ability to discriminate between closely similar items and the correction of errors by the use of pre-set strategies.
  4. Knowledge of specific techniques and instruments and the ability to recognize factors which could directly affect results.
  5. Knowledge of medical technology, theory, practices, techniques, and procedures.
  6. Skill in performing laboratory testing.
  7. Knowledge of laboratory safety practices.
  8. Knowledge of HIPAA regulations and compliance standards.
  9. Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with patients, Laboratory staff, other employees and the general public, both orally and in writing, and maintaining a professional demeanor.
  10. Ability to maintain a positive, helpful department, encouraging team members.
  11. Ability to work under stress and function in emergency situations.
  12. Good communication skills, computer knowledge, and the ability to work with others as a team to ensure quality patient care.
JOB SUMMARY

The purpose of the position is to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of disease by performing moderately complex and highly complex procedures in a specific area of the laboratory under the direction of the laboratory manager or lab director when necessary. Provides data in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. The Hospital MLS may perform phlebotomy, processing, and send outs, as well as train less experienced staff. The Hospital MLS will be assigned as primary operator of an analyzer or section, including ensuring all duties related to their assigned analyzer or section is reviewed, up to date with changes in package inserts, any errors are remediated as quickly as possible, accurate and precise results are released, and documentation is complete and available. Because MCNDOH hospital laboratories must be staffed 24/7, the Hospital MLS working in a hospital will rotate holidays and may be required to rotate to other days and hours as needed for patient care.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a laboratory environment. There is common exposure to infectious communicable disease, and biohazardous materials. Incumbent must be aware of all risks involved, and be willing to take precautions as required and requested. Special attire may be required as protection against infection and radiation.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work requires long periods of standing and walking. Working with patients requires recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching and positioning patients. Ability to lift in excess of 50 pounds is needed. Incumbent will also have to cope with constant changes in a stress-laden environment. Must be able to differentiate color and pass a color blindness test.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Satisfactory job performance will be determined by successful execution of the following:

  1. Performs all testing within the section as needed.

  2. Assists with Set up of new methodologies, development of procedural protocols, writing procedures and training laboratory personnel.

  3. Participates in performance improvement activities and supports the laboratory in meeting all regulatory accreditation standards.

  4. Checks the validity and accuracy of test results.

  5. Verifies lab reports are received and completed in laboratory information system and electronic health record.

  6. Assists less skilled laboratory personnel with more difficult procedures and analysis.

  7. Assists to check and maintain a Quality Assurance Program.

  8. Assists to check and maintain a Quality Control Program.

  9. Must be willing to be assigned a laboratory analyzer and be responsible as the primary operator of that analyzer. This includes all work associated with this analyzer.

  10. Checks the operating efficiency of laboratory equipment and instruments, recognizes problems and takes corrective action.

  11. Performs preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment and instruments.

  12. Performs various chemical, microscopic, morphological, immunological and bacteriological testing and other tests as assigned.

  13. Regular attendance is required.

  14. Performs other assigned duties as required.

  15. Maintains continuing education as required.
