Description
The City of Aiken is accepting applications for a Utilities Team Leader to join our Engineering & Utilities department in the Water Distribution division.
Examples of Duties
  • Serves as lead of crew; plans and schedules work orders and assigns work within crew; trains workers in safe operation of equipment; instructs crew members in correct methods and procedures; monitors and inspects work in progress to ensure timely completion
  • Operates heavy equipment for digging and opening ditches
  • Operates equipment in clearing right-of-way, trenching, filling, and back-filling
  • Operates equipment for loading and unloading of materials and supplies
  • Oversees proper installation of water taps, water valves, fire hydrants, water mains, sanitary and stormwater sewer lines, sewer cleanouts, manholes, bedding and compaction of soils and materials around utilities, road subbase, cement, asphalt, and grass and soil replacement
  • Able to operate and train employees in the proper operation and maintenance of crew and department equipment including: tapping machine, boring machine, air compressor, tube cutter, jack hammers, chop and chain saw, water pump, plate tamper, jumping jack, fork truck and back hoe
Other Responsibilities:
  • Ensures employees are trained and follow safe trenching and shoring techniques, traffic control procedures, as well as utility 811 locate procedures to maintain an accident-free workplace
  • Ensures employees maintain equipment and tools and wear safety gear when appropriate; notifies supervisor of major equipment and work problems
  • Maintains a clean and safe work area; performs duties in a safe manner, and follows State and Federal best management practices
  • Completes daily work reports and repairs/cleans equipment
  • Stocks crew truck with appropriate supplies for day to day operations
  • Works on-call work on a rotating basis

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Analytical ability to plan work schedules, diagnose equipment malfunctions, and determine necessary repairs
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively lead subordinates, be courteous of fellow employees, citizens, and businesses while performing repair and maintenance duties
  • Two years in maintenance experience and performing manual labor, or any combination of education and experience which produces the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Ability to perform strenuous, heavy work involving lifting and carrying heavy objects; also continued walking, stooping, and standing

Retirement
Full-time employees participate in the Defined Contribution 401(a) Retirement Plan. After one year of employment, the employee will begin contributing 6% to the Plan, with the City making a matching 6% contribution. Employees are fully vested after 5 years of service.
