Civil Project Manager

Job Description

This role leads and supports heavy highway and DOT roadway projects from pre-construction through closeout as part of a close-knit project management team. The Construction Project Manager oversees complex roadway and civil infrastructure work, ensuring projects meet budget, schedule, safety, and quality expectations. This position suits an experienced, hands-on leader who enjoys working closely with field teams and collaborating across estimating, operations, and subcontractors within a team-oriented, family-run environment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all aspects of heavy highway and DOT construction projects from award through completion, including planning, execution, and closeout.
  • Oversee project budgets, schedules, and cost controls to ensure financial performance and timely delivery.
  • Manage subcontractors and self-performed work, ensuring alignment with project plans, specifications, and quality standards.
  • Coordinate closely with estimating and operations teams during project handoff to ensure a smooth transition into construction.
  • Review and manage contract documents, drawings, and specifications, identifying and addressing potential issues proactively.
  • Lead regular coordination meetings with owners, subcontractors, and internal teams to communicate progress, resolve issues, and maintain alignment.
  • Track job costs, change orders, and forecasting, and provide accurate and timely project reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with DOT requirements, safety regulations, and internal quality control procedures on all projects.
  • Support and guide field leadership, providing direction to superintendents and field crews to achieve project objectives.
  • Travel to project sites throughout the Midwest as needed to monitor progress, support field operations, and maintain client relationships.
  • Participate in or support bidding and estimation activities as needed, leveraging estimating software and project management tools.
  • Mentor and support junior team members, fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented project environment.

Essential Skills

  • Experience in heavy civil construction project management with a strong experience in roadway and DOT projects.
  • Proven experience managing multiple construction projects and competing priorities effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage subcontractors and project teams on active construction sites.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to direct field staff and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, for effective coordination with owners, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities in a fast-paced construction environment.
  • Proficiency in construction project management practices, including budgeting, scheduling, cost control, and change management.
  • Experience using estimating software and other construction management tools.
  • Willingness and ability to travel approximately 20 nights per year to regional project sites.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management.
  • Experience with heavy highway, paving, grading, drainage, and bridge construction projects.
  • Familiarity with DOT compliance, documentation, and reporting requirements.
  • Experience working for a self-performing heavy civil contractor.
  • Experience in structural construction and bridge construction within roadway and civil infrastructure projects.
  • Hands-on experience with roadway and roadway construction in a DOT environment.
  • Ability to mentor junior team members and contribute to team development and growth.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in managing contracts, specifications, and project records.
  • Comfort working in a team-oriented, family-run organizational culture that emphasizes quality and long-term relationships.

Work Environment

The role is primarily based in an office setting in the Kansas City, Kansas area, with regular interaction with project managers, estimators, operations staff, and field leadership. The position involves occasional regional travel, estimated at approximately 20 nights per year, to visit project sites throughout the Midwest. When traveling, the company covers hotels, meals, and travel expenses, typically via a company card. The work environment emphasizes collaboration, stability, and long-term growth, with a focus on quality over rapid expansion.
