Primary Purpose:
Sheldon ISD is seeking a skilled and dependable Diesel Mechanic to join our Transportation Department. This position is responsible for performing maintenance and repairs on district-owned diesel and gasoline-powered school buses and service vehicles to ensure safe and efficient transportation for students and staff.
Qualifications:
ASE- Professional Technician Certification or Master Technician Certification
High school diploma or GED required.
Valid Texas driver's license (CDL with P and S endorsements preferred or ability to obtain).
Valid DOT Medical Certification and Texas School Bus Driver Certification
Ability to operate diagnostic equipment and read service manuals.
Working knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, brakes, electrical systems, and air conditioning systems.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform duties in various weather conditions.
Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and diesel engine issues on district vehicles.
  • Conduct routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and safety checks.
  • Maintain accurate service records and documentation for each vehicle.
  • Ensure compliance with Texas Department of Public Safety regulations and district safety standards.
  • Respond to roadside service calls and emergency repairs as needed.
  • Collaborate with transportation staff to schedule repairs and minimize vehicle downtime.
  • Maintain an organized and safe working environment in the district's bus garage.

Experience:
Experience performing preventive maintenance and mechanical repairs on school buses, heavy-duty trucks, or similar diesel-powered vehicles.
Experience working with hydraulic systems, brake systems, electrical troubleshooting, and air conditioning repairs.
Familiarity with DOT and Texas Department of Public Safety regulations related to transportation vehicles.
Preferred: Experience in a public transportation agency, or large fleet operation.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
  1. Maintenance and Repairs
  • Perform diagnostics, repairs, and routine maintenance on all district vehicles, including diesel and gasoline engines.
  • Repair and replace faulty parts including brakes, steering systems, transmissions, electrical components, and cooling systems.

  1. Inspections and Compliance
  • Conduct Texas-required vehicle inspections and maintain proper documentation.
  • Ensure all vehicles meet state and federal safety and emissions standards.

  1. Recordkeeping and Documentation
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date service records and work logs for each vehicle.
  • Input maintenance activities into fleet management software or work order system.

  1. Emergency Response
  • Respond to breakdowns and provide on-site or roadside mechanical support as needed.
  • Diagnose and correct mechanical issues to minimize disruption to transportation services.

  1. Shop and Equipment Maintenance
  • Keep tools, equipment, and work areas clean, organized, and in safe working conditions.
  • Maintain inventory of parts and supplies and notify the supervisor when reordering is necessary.

  1. Teamwork and Communication
  • Communicate effectively with drivers, supervisors, and transportation staff to report vehicle issues.
  • Collaborate with other mechanics and transportation staff to ensure timely repairs and fleet readiness.

  1. Other Duties
  • Assist with snow or storm response preparations if applicable.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation or designee.

* This position requires on-site, in-person work and does not offer remote work options.
