Denver Botanic Gardens is currently seeking a Full Time Plant Records Coordinator at our Chatfield Farms location! Read below to see if the requirements might be a good fit for you:
Position Summary
This position is responsible for coordinating plant collections management efforts at both Denver Botanic Gardens York Street and Chatfield Farms locations, and providing assistance with plant records functions including mapping, inventory, drone imagery and labeling at York Street. Working independently or alongside horticulture staff and volunteers, the Plant Records Coordinator will inventory and map plants at Chatfield Farms, including gardens and greenhouses; update the AutoCAD basemap for Chatfield Farms through appropriate surveying or drone imagery use; and assist with plant acquisitions data management, including accessioning of plants, at Chatfield Farms. Additional responsibilities include, managing label inventory and requests at Chatfield Farms, including the upkeep of labels in the public spaces; photography and databasing of plant images; providing support for research and plant production activities at Chatfield Farms and York Street; and supporting the use of plant acquisition data tools at Chatfield Farms.
Requirements
General Duties and Responsibilities
  • Utilizes appropriate mapping and surveying techniques to inventory and map gardens including plants and hardscape areas.
  • Uses computer database (BG-BASE) to create inventories, locate plants and communicate with horticulture staff.
  • Updates BG-BASE records, including creating new accessions and plant locations, and updating check notes, phenology, and plant health/life statuses.
  • Utilizes BG-Map and Auto-CAD to maintain up-to-date maps for garden areas and provides digital or print maps for horticulturists
  • Coordinates with team members to ensure highest degree of data integrity through excellent record-keeping and processing documentation.
  • Assists with labeling and photographing plant collections and maintenance of Gardens Navigator website for Chatfield Farms' specific content.
  • Contributes articles to internal and external publications.
  • Obtains/maintains a FAA Remote Pilot Certificate (Part 107 license) and gains proficiency in drone piloting, following Gardens' guidelines and federal regulations. Operates Gardens' owned drone for horticulture and collections purposes in coordination with IT.
  • Supports Chatfield Farms horticulture team members in adoption and use of Plant Acquisition Tools, including tracking of received plants to specific garden locations. Reports issues to the Associate Director.
  • Supports the Plant Records department in GIS and CAD mapping, data entry, and processes documentation efforts.
  • Provides insight into evolving mapping technologies and practices.
  • Becomes proficient with digital asset management system, NetX, and acts as a liaison for horticulture department for this system.
  • Coordinates and updates changes to the Rainbird Site Control irrigation system on behalf of horticulture team.
  • Assists with the annual spring plant sale's planning and execution at the division level.
  • Supervises volunteers for specific projects and mentors and advises interns depending upon project. Provides training and support as needed for volunteers or interns.
  • Other tasks in support of the Horticulture department, including (but not limited to) contribution to special projects and outreach efforts.
  • Serves as a horticultural resource to management, co-workers, volunteers, members and visitors.
  • Regular attendance at the worksite is required. As with all positions at Denver Botanic Gardens, the incumbent must be in good performance standing to be eligible for remote work. Remote work is at the discretion of management at all times.
  • All Gardens employees must be committed to the mission of connecting people with plants, especially plants from the Rocky Mountain region and similar regions around the world, providing delight and enlightenment to everyone.

Position Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to work well independently and collaboratively.
  • Must have proven excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills in dealing with team members and the public.
  • Ability to maintain stability under pressure and able to deal well with stressful situations.
  • Ability to be flexible and willing to modify plans when necessary, throughout the day
  • Knowledge of plant collections management systems, such as BG-BASE, BG-Map and AutoCAD
  • Knowledge of Esri's ArcGIS products, or other GIS tools and databases
  • Plant identification skills, including ability to use dichotomous keys, and a working knowledge of plant nomenclature, including scientific plant names.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a drone pilot's license.
  • Understanding of principles related to surveying, cartography and mapping.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Suite products, specifically Word, Excel and Outlook and Teams.
  • Ability to work overtime as necessary.
  • Must be a positive representative of the Gardens both internally and externally at all times.
  • Must work with respect and cooperation at all times with fellow employees and the public.
  • Must be committed to working safely at all times.

Experience/Education:
  • Bachelors degree or certificate in GIS, landscape architecture, horticulture or related field with 3 to 4 years of experience, and/or combination of education and equivalent experience.
  • FAA Part 107 (UAS) Certification is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in horticulture is a plus.
  • Valid Colorado Driver's license required.

Travel:
Up to 10% travel required. Requires the ability to travel to remote locations (or other Garden locations) where environment may vary significantly.
