The Nurse Intern II is currently enrolled in an Associates or Bachelor's degree nursing program and has completed at least one year of clinical rotation. The Intern II works as an effective member of the nursing team under the direction of a registered nurse to provide quality, patient centered care in the assigned nursing unit. The director/coordinator of the unit to which the student nurse is assigned will provide supervision. The student nurse will not perform any tasks or procedures that require nursing judgement, competency, or licensure as a nurse. Verification of skills documentation is required from the school and is validated by the supervisory RN.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Care provider: Provides patient care, consistent with medical plan of care, for one to three patients. Patient care encompasses the following:
  • Assists with tasks as assigned by the Charge RN or Primary Care nurse.
  • Completes a complete head to toe physical assessment
  • Documents assessments and pertinent patient information in the electeronic medical record (EMR). Preceptor signs off on the documentation.
  • Utilizes therapeutic communication techniques to facilitate the patient's optimum level of wellness.
  • Receives and provides verbal bedside reports on each patient at the start and end of each shift.
  • Provides emotional support and individualized patient education to patients and families, in accordance with accepted nursing practice and medical plan of care.
  • Identifies needs for change and updates the Plan of Care under the direction of RN preceptor.
  • Communicates effectively with health care team to notify of patient's needs
  • Assists with passing and collecting meal trays and documents amount of intake in EMR. Ensures the patient is positioned properly and food is within reach.
  • Feeds patient when necessary in a non-rushed, pleasant manner.
  • Monitors fluid intake and output (I & O) for assigned patients and documents results in the EMR.
  • Obtains vital signs and documents in the EMR at the bedside; informs RN of any changes in condition or concerning vital signs.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary rounds, interacts with physician regarding patient conditions.
  • Provides AM and HS care, including oral hygiene to patients while giving special attention to dentures when necessary.
  • Gives partial and complete baths in a manner providing for the patients comfort and privacy.
  • Makes bed occupied and unoccupied, neatly.
  • Places cardiac monitoring. May perform EKGs following competency.
  • Answers patient call lights promptly.
  • Straightens room, makes sure call light and bedside stand are within patient's reach. Provides fresh drinking water to all assigned patients.
  • Uses proper body mechanics when re-positioning a patient or transferring patient from one surface to another.
  • Coordinates patient care with other hospital departments such as, physical therapy, radiology, social services, and lab. Prepares patients for transport to other departments for testing.
  • Assists with the admission and discharge of patients as requested by the nurse.
  • Observant of changes in patient's condition and reports them promptly to RN.
  • Gives oral hygiene with special attention to dentures.

  • Understands and demonstrates proper use and application of patient-safety devices.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the supportive equipment used on each nursing unit and cleans equipment according to manufacturers recommendations.
  • Gives written and verbal reports, which are pertinent, precise, and complete.
  • Economical in the use of supplies and equipment.
  • Observes lines of communication appropriate to the circumstance.
  • Remains composed and directive during emergency and stressful situations.
  • Administers CPR according to American Heart Association Standards (Basic Life Support for the Health Care Provider) to patients in cardiac arrest, on an emergency basis. Must be available for this function, which takes precedence over all others. Unrestricted movement of bothupper and lower extremities, neck, shoulders, back, and hips required to perform this function.
  • May observe procedures or assist with tasks in the Surgery Department under the direction of the Director or Coordinator.
  • May observe and assist with procedures (catheter insertion, IV insertion) under the supervision of the preceptor or primary care nurse.
  • Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions; ensures compliance with Joint Commission and other external and internal regulatory agencies.
  • Maintains the integrity of confidential patient information in accordance with HIPAA and hospital policy, including accessing, using and disclosing patient information relevant to the individual employee's job duties. Also maintains confidentiality of other customer and hospital business affairs.
  • Adheres to the standards of Magruder Hospital's corporate compliance policies and seeks guidance and training when necessary to resolve questions about the policies. Reports violations in accordance with corporate compliance and organizational standards.
  • Reports to work on time and as scheduled; Shows respect for co-workers by following established break times; Keeps personal conversations and telephone calls to a minimum.
