Job description

Position Overview This is technical work in preparing engineering drawings, maps, and other data for public works engineering projects. Work involves preparing precise drawings and maps from engineering and survey notes using AutoCAD Civil 3D software. Data is collected, generated and disseminated for private, commercial and public works construction projects.

Work is performed with independence of judgment and action. It is then reviewed for adherence to policies and procedures, accuracy and completeness and for results achieved. Work is checked and reviewed frequently throughout its progress and at its completion by senior engineers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (All duties listed may not be included in any one position nor does the list include all tasks found in a position of this class.) Plans, designs and prepares signs, charts, illustrations and related materials using various GIS sources including computer software and drafting techniques. Maintains and updates maps of the County's infrastructure system. Prepares street plans, profiles, and cross sections for the grading, paving and curbing of county roads, avenue, boulevards, sidewalks, and traffic ways, utilizing AutoCAD Civil 3D computer software

Reduces survey field notes, and plots preliminary drawings, including property lines and existing utilities such as water mains, gas mains, underground electrical, and telephone conduits, steam lines, sanitary laterals, and storm sanitary sewers; from preliminary project drawings. Completes construction details such as special manholes, inlet and outlet structure, junction chambers, gate chambers, gate valves, and fire hydrants. Researches various types of data forms including deed descriptions and recorded plats; locates information and data for engineering staff, utility company representatives, property owners and the general public.

Ensures that all plans, maps, projects, and surveys are properly filed and current. Updates map file and computerized data base for archived projects on an on-going basis. May coordinate the work of employees or engineering interns engaged in the collection of field data using GPS/GIS mapping systems.

Interacts with members of the public, public officials, and other governmental agencies to investigate complaints and provide information related to public infrastructure. Reviews plans and applications submitted by external surveying, engineering, construction, or other entities to ensure technical compliance with County ordinances and regulations. Performs other related work as required.

Education and Experience Education and Experience Must have a high school diploma or GED. Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution. Minimum of three years of experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D software.

Minimum of three years of experience in the field of civil engineering. Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Considerable knowledge of engineering practices applied in the location, design, and construction of roads and structures. Considerable knowledge of the terminology, methods, equipment, practices, instruments, and techniques of general engineering mapping and drawing.

Ability to operate computerized positioning and mapping programs. Ability to prepare maps and drawings from survey field notes, utilizing AutoCAD Civil 3D software. Skill in the use of computerized programs and equipment, drafting instruments and devices.

Skill in the operation of all standard surveying and drafting instruments. Skill in the performance of all algebraic and trigonometric computation applied in standard surveying and highway design operations. Ability to read and interpret assigned types of civil engineering plans, maps and specifications, and to obtain compliance by the contractor in all details.

Certifications or Licenses Certification as an Engineering Intern from the Alabama Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution. To be considered for this position, all applicants must complete the employment application in full.
