Description
The City of La Verne is looking for dedicated and reliable individuals to serve as Crossing Guards for the children of Bonita Unified School District. Make a difference in your community by becoming a Crossing Guard!
This position is supervised by the La Verne Police Community Engagement Supervisor.
Crossing Guards direct school-aged children who are crossing streets at assigned street corners during designated hours, maintain discipline among school children when they are approaching a street intersection or crossing the street, determine the safest possible time to cross the street, and stop and start traffic to permit the crossing of school children at a street intersection.
Crossing Guards also evaluate situations and act properly and quickly in emergencies, report any accidents of school children, report vehicles failing to obey traffic regulations at school crossings, and communicate clearly and effectively with children and motorists.
Hours: This is a recurrent, part-time, as needed position. Must be available to work Monday - Friday, mornings and afternoons. Will work approximately 3 hours per day, 5 days per week. Work dates are determined by the BUSD schedule for student attendance.

Examples of Duties
Typical duties may include:
  • Communicate clearly and concisely with motorists and pedestrians.
  • Ensure patron and public safety.
  • Have excellent public relations skills.
  • Provide excellent customer service.
  • Familiarity with traffic rules and regulations: Use STOP signs, stop traffic, and escort or supervise children crossing streets at intersections.
  • Maintain surveillance of children walking or playing near the street and alert them of traffic when necessary.
  • Report accidents or unusual traffic incidents to school authorities, City personnel, or police.
  • Maintain regular attendance in variable weather conditions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
Crossing Guards must be at least 18 years of age and be available for the required work schedule.
Knowledge of:
  • Equipment and tools used in the area of work assigned.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Safety principles and practices including safety rules when crossing streets.
Ability to:
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Fluently speak the English language and understand both written and oral English usage.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including working effectively with school children.
  • Remain calm and use good judgment in emergency situations.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, including repetitive walking and standing as needed throughout shift and repetitive light lifting of a "Stop" sign above the head.
  • Maintain mental capacity, which allows for effective interaction and communication with others.
  • Maintain effective audio/visual discrimination and perception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned duties.
  • Work in outdoor conditions, including heat, wind, and rain, with exposure to traffic noise and exhaust as well as slippery or uneven surfaces.
