What are gas works?

Gas works are industrial facilities where gas, typically coal gas or town gas, is produced and processed for use in heating, lighting, and cooking. These plants convert raw materials such as coal or oil into gaseous fuel through chemical processes like gasification. Gas works also purify the gas to remove impurities before distribution to homes and businesses. Today, most traditional gas works have been replaced by natural gas processing plants, but the term still refers to sites involved in the manufacture and handling of gaseous fuels.
