What are foundations in construction?

Foundations in construction are the structural elements that transfer the load of a building or structure to the ground, ensuring stability and safety. They support the weight of the entire structure and help prevent settling, shifting, or collapse by distributing the load evenly across the soil or bedrock. There are several types of foundations, including shallow foundations like spread footings and deep foundations like piles, chosen based on soil conditions and the size of the project. Proper foundation design and construction are critical to the longevity and safety of any building.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Foundation Program Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Foundation Program Manager, you need strong project management skills, experience in grant writing, fundraising, and a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with donor management software, CRM systems, and standard reporting tools is typically required. Exceptional communication, relationship-building, and organizational skills help in engaging stakeholders and leading diverse teams. These skills are crucial for effectively advancing the foundation's mission, ensuring transparency, and maximizing community impact.

What is the difference between Foundations vs Carpenter?

Foundations specialists focus specifically on constructing and repairing building foundations, requiring knowledge of concrete and structural support. Carpenters have a broader skill set, working on framing, finishing, and other wood-based tasks. Professionals working in Foundations roles often face challenges related to balancing donor expectations with organizational goals, managing multiple projects simultaneously, and staying updated with grant compliance requirements. Navigating diverse stakeholder interests and building long-term relationships also requires strong communication and negotiation skills. To address these challenges, it's helpful to establish clear processes, maintain transparent communication, and continuously engage in professional development related to fundraising and nonprofit management.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced technician who wants to play a visible role in shaping complex civil and rail infrastructure projects through high-quality structural plans and details.

Why STV

At STV, you'll have the opportunity to contribute to complex, high-visibility transportation projects that make a lasting impact on communities. You'll work alongside experienced engineers, designers, and technical professionals in a collaborative environment that values quality, innovation, and continuous improvement. This role offers the chance to take ownership of meaningful structural work, expand your technical expertise, and be part of a team shaping the future of civil and rail infrastructure.

What You'll Do

In this role, you'll be a key contributor in developing structural drawings, details, and plan packages for bridges, retaining walls, foundations, stations, and other civil and rail-related structures. You'll partner closely with structural engineers, civil designers, and multidisciplinary teams to turn design concepts into clear, coordinated, construction-ready deliverables-while helping drive quality, consistency, and best practices across impactful transportation projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of 2D and 3D CADD drawings for structural components of civil and rail projects, including bridges, retaining walls, foundations, and ancillary structures.
  • Develop and coordinate plans, elevations, sections, details, schedules, and quantity information for structural deliverables.
  • Interpret complex engineering markups, design sketches, and redlines and incorporate revisions accurately and efficiently.
  • Apply and uphold company, client, DOT, transit, and rail CAD standards across structural drawing packages.
  • Perform and support QA/QC reviews to ensure drawing accuracy, constructability, consistency, and completeness.
  • Collaborate with structural engineers, civil teams, rail designers, and other CADD staff to coordinate multidisciplinary deliverables.
  • Support the production of construction packages, record drawings, and as-built documents for structural scope.
  • Work within client and industry standards such as AREMA, agency criteria, and structural drafting requirements applicable to transportation projects.
  • Help improve drafting workflows, share best practices, and provide guidance to junior technicians, contributing to the continued growth and strength of the team.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate degree or certificate in Computer-Aided Drafting (CADD), Engineering Technology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of CADD experience supporting structural components of transportation, civil, rail, or bridge projects.
  • Strong proficiency in AutoCAD and/or MicroStation, with the ability to produce detailed structural plan sets with a high level of independence.
  • Demonstrated understanding of structural drafting standards, detailing practices, and plan production workflows.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, designers, and multidisciplinary teams across all phases of project delivery.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting structural design packages for bridges, retaining walls, foundations, stations, or other transportation structures.
  • Experience with MicroStation OpenBridge/OpenRail/OpenRoads, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and/or other transportation design platforms used for structural delivery.
  • Experience with LA Metro, Metrolink, DOT, freight rail, or transit agency standards is a plus.
  • Strong working knowledge of:
    • Rail and civil alignment impacts on structural plan development
    • Structural drawings for bridges, retaining walls, foundations, and related transportation structures
    • Advanced plan production, sheet coordination, and multidisciplinary drawing workflows
  • Experience coordinating with junior technicians or helping reinforce team drafting standards is a plus.
  • Experience contributing to QA/QC, drafting efficiency improvements, and best-practice development is preferred.
