How much do fluid structure interaction internship jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 8, 2026, the average hourly pay for fluid structure interaction internship in the United States is $19.34, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.38 and $21.63 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a Fluid Structure Interaction Internship?

A Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) Internship is a temporary position designed for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in studying how fluids (like water or air) interact with solid structures. Interns typically assist with simulations, modeling, and analysis using specialized software to predict and understand these interactions. This role is common in industries such as aerospace, civil engineering, and biomedical engineering, where understanding FSI is critical for designing safe and efficient products or systems.

What is the difference between Fluid Structure Interaction Internship vs Fluid Dynamics Engineer?

AspectFluid Structure Interaction InternshipFluid Dynamics Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Civil EngineeringBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Civil Engineering; often with specialized fluid dynamics coursework
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, internship programs, collaborative projects with engineering teamsDesign offices, research labs, industrial settings, project-based work
Industry UsageInternship roles in aerospace, automotive, civil engineering firmsFull-time roles in aerospace, automotive, energy, and research sectors

While both roles involve fluid mechanics, a Fluid Structure Interaction Internship focuses on gaining practical experience in simulating and analyzing interactions between fluids and structures, often as part of an internship program. A Fluid Dynamics Engineer, on the other hand, is a full-time professional responsible for designing, analyzing, and optimizing fluid systems. The internship provides foundational exposure, whereas the engineer role involves advanced responsibilities and project leadership.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Fluid Structure Interaction Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fluid Structure Interaction Intern, you need a strong background in mechanical or aerospace engineering, applied mathematics, or related fields, along with knowledge of fluid dynamics and structural mechanics. Familiarity with simulation tools such as ANSYS, Abaqus, or COMSOL, and programming languages like Python or MATLAB, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills set candidates apart. These competencies are vital for accurately modeling complex interactions and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to drive innovative engineering solutions.

What typical projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a Fluid Structure Interaction Internship?

As a Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) intern, you can expect to contribute to projects involving the simulation and analysis of how fluids interact with solid structures. This often includes setting up and running computational models using FSI software, analyzing simulation results, and collaborating with engineers from both fluid dynamics and structural teams. Interns may also assist in validating computational results with experimental data and help optimize designs based on simulation insights. These experiences provide a strong foundation for understanding interdisciplinary engineering challenges and can open doors to advanced roles in simulation and analysis.
