Is 100 an hour good for consulting?

For an external consultant, earning $100 an hour can be considered average to above average depending on the industry, experience, and location. Senior consultants or those with specialized skills often charge higher rates, while entry-level consultants may earn less. Factors such as project scope, client budget, and required expertise influence consulting rates.

What are external consultants?

External consultants are professionals hired from outside an organization to provide expert advice, guidance, or specialized services on specific projects or business challenges. They are not permanent employees but work on a contractual basis, bringing independent perspectives and industry expertise. Companies often engage external consultants to solve complex problems, implement new strategies, or improve operational efficiency. Their objective viewpoint can help identify issues and opportunities that internal teams may overlook. External consultants can work in various fields such as management, IT, finance, or human resources.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an External Consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an External Consultant, you need strong analytical abilities, problem-solving skills, and expertise in your area of specialization, often supported by a relevant degree and industry experience. Familiarity with project management software, data analysis tools, and sometimes certifications like PMP or Six Sigma are beneficial. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and relationship-building skills help foster client trust and manage diverse stakeholder expectations. These skills are crucial for delivering effective solutions, maintaining client satisfaction, and ensuring successful project outcomes.

What is the difference between External Consultant vs Internal Consultant?

Internal Consultants are employees within a company, focusing on internal projects and long-term strategic support. Both roles require relevant credentials, but their work environments and employer relationships differ significantly.

How do external consultants typically integrate with client teams during a project?

External consultants usually work closely with client teams to understand their goals, challenges, and workflows. They often participate in regular meetings, conduct interviews or workshops, and collaborate with stakeholders to gather information and ensure alignment. While maintaining a level of independence, consultants are expected to build trust and communicate transparently to drive project success. This collaborative approach helps ensure that recommendations are practical and tailored to the client’s needs.

Job description

Grow with us. Lead with us.
At Pioneer, you'll work directly with executive teams, solving complex problems and shaping strategies that reset what's possible. Sometimes the work is headline-worthy. Sometimes it's foundational. But every project earns trust - and earns us the right to take on more. You'll get the kind of access, challenge, and growth found at big firms - while helping build a company that's scaling fast and guided by what we value.
If you're looking for meaning, momentum, and a seat at the table, you're in the right place.
As a Senior Consultant on the Data & Analytics team, you will work directly in client environments delivering hands-on analytics work while helping drive projects forward. You will own workstreams end-to-end, coordinate across client stakeholders and Pioneer team members, and occasionally serve as the day-to-day project lead on smaller engagements. The expectation is simple: take a project, run with it, and deliver. You will regularly engage with client business users and technical teams to translate problems into data-driven solutions - sleeves rolled up from day one.
Responsibilities:
  • Align: Work with leaders to define success and prioritize business problems that will lead to high business impact when solved.
  • Engage: Dig in with business leaders and data teams to uncover core problems, leading with curiosity and humility to unearth issues related to data and how analytics is used.
  • Design: Lead clients through a human-centered design approach to problem solving, collaborating closely with combined client teams.
  • Execute: Manage analytics programs/projects with a hyper focus on delivery excellence - we dive into data analytics projects "with our sleeves rolled up."
  • Lead: Occasionally serve as the day-to-day project manager on smaller engagements or workstreams, keeping projects on track and stakeholders aligned while remaining a hands-on contributor.
  • Sustain: Equip teams with an actionable plan for using data more effectively, resulting in deeper insights, data-informed decisions, and an elevated culture of applying analytics.
  • Business Development: Own existing client relationships and establish new ones.
  • Client Resolution: Proficient at recognizing and diagnosing client problems.
  • Relationship Building: Proactively cultivate and expand your professional network.

Requirements
  • 5+ years of professional experience working in data & analytics in a project management, engineering, or development role.
  • 2+ years working as an internal or external consultant, or equivalent project-based work experience
  • Proficiency in SQL (required), experience querying, transforming, and modeling data in a professional setting. Bonus points for: Azure Data Factory, Databricks, Power BI, PowerApps, PowerAutomate, Fabric, Python, or AI/ML tools (e.g., Azure AI Foundry, etc.)
  • Familiarity with cloud data platforms (Microsoft Azure preferred) including storage and ETL concepts
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas effectively (verbal and written)
  • Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative team environment
  • Comfort handling ambiguity and managing multiple assignments
  • Ability to work effectively with people at all levels in an organization
  • Client-facing experience; ability to build rapport and communicate effectively with business stakeholders
  • Proven skills in the identification and resolution of client challenges
  • Collaborative by nature; willing to engage across teams and client organizations
  • Bachelor's degree preferred

Location
Pioneer Minneapolis Office: 212 N 3rd Ave, Suite 327, Minneapolis, MN 55401
#LI-EH1
Benefits
Pioneer is proud to offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes meaningful time off and paid holidays, parental leave, 401(k) including employer match, tuition reimbursement, and a broad range of health and wellness benefits including medical, dental, vision, life, long and short-term disability, etc.
The estimated salary range for this role is $110,000-165,000 annually. This range is unique to every candidate, and is based on skillset, years of experience, and breadth of knowledge. This may differ from location to location. Bonuses and other incentives are awarded at the Company's discretion and are based upon individual contributions and overall company performance.
