Job description

The opportunity

Pittsburgh Community Broadcasting's digital team is hiring a digital editor to create and promote engaging digital content for WESA.fm, as well as Pittsburgh Community Broadcasting Corporation and its associated digital and social media sites. The Digital Editor uses photography/videography, social media, newsletters, data visualization, original reporting and other best-practice techniques to elevate and amplify the work of WESA's newsroom. The Digital Editor helps to grow WESA's users and followers on all associated digital platforms.

Essential Functions:

  • Create and promote engaging digital content for use on WESA.fm and its associated digital and social media sites.
  • Consistently generate and pitch creative, thoughtful and original story ideas in multiple media.
  • Create and distribute a daily newsletter to WESA's subscribers.
  • Edit and update the WESA website with new content from reporters, Associated Press and various partners.
  • Work with reporters on digital content, from dictating what a story should look like, to making photo/video assignments and assigning social media responsibilities.
  • Assist the digital work of WESA reporters and editors.
  • Create and curate content to post on social media accounts.
  • Use social media to break news and engage audiences.
  • General reporting as assigned by the News Director or Digital Director.
  • Assist the Digital Director and team with compilating and analyzing digital performance analytics to assess, implement and/or modify strategies for digital audience growth and engagement.
  • Work with NPR's Digital Services for any interruptions in service on WESA's website and fix any issues.
  • Work during off hours and weekends as the news cycle or breaking-news developments may demand.
  • Assist with the WYEP digital needs including CMS, editing, graphics, social.
  • Create social media campaigns to correspond with pledge drives.
  • Participate in on-air and online fundraising.
  • Assist with compilating and analyzing digital data analytics in order to assess and implement strategies for audience growth and engagement.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong reporting, writing and technical skills.
  • Strong digital and social media skills.
  • Deep knowledge of digital analytics analysis and ability to implement findings into strategy
  • Sound and ethical judgment, with a commitment to balance and fairness.
  • Skilled at Photoshop, Adobe Audition, Canva and Grove (CMS).
  • Skilled in Google Analytics, Facebook advertising tools, and MailChimp.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
  • Creativity and sound judgment in social media usage.
  • Capable of working effectively in a highly collaborative culture.
  • Effective time-management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism related field or equivalent experience/training.
  • Three or more years of digital reporting/producing in a professional newsroom.
  • Highly motivated and creative with knowledge of required digital and journalism skills and a willingness to develop through training.
  • Honesty and integrity in all dealings.
  • Enthusiasm for the missions of PCBC and its stations.

Our compensation packages are generous. We provide competitive salaries in an affordable city. The minimum compensation for this position is $63,240, commensurate with experience and ability.
