How much do electronic hardware engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 8, 2026, the average yearly pay for electronic hardware engineer in the United States is $126,844.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $109,500.00 and $144,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electronic Hardware Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electronic Hardware Engineer, you need a solid foundation in electronic circuit design, embedded systems, and a degree in electrical or electronics engineering. Familiarity with tools like PCB design software (e.g., Altium Designer, Eagle), hardware description languages, and relevant certifications (such as IPC or IEEE) is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication abilities set outstanding engineers apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for developing reliable hardware solutions and ensuring successful project delivery in a collaborative environment.

What are Electronic Hardware Engineers?

Electronic Hardware Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and test electronic components and systems for various applications, such as computers, communications equipment, medical devices, and consumer electronics. They work with circuit boards, processors, memory devices, and other hardware components to ensure functionality, reliability, and efficiency. These engineers collaborate closely with software engineers, manufacturers, and other stakeholders to bring electronic products from concept to production.

What are some common challenges Electronic Hardware Engineers face when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Electronic Hardware Engineers often collaborate closely with software developers, mechanical engineers, and project managers. A common challenge is ensuring seamless integration between hardware and software, which requires clear communication and detailed documentation. Balancing project timelines while accommodating iterative design changes from other disciplines is also frequent. Successfully navigating these challenges enhances project outcomes and fosters valuable cross-functional experience.

What is the difference between Electronic Hardware Engineer vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectElectronic Hardware EngineerElectrical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or related field; certifications like IPC certificationsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering or related; similar certifications
Work EnvironmentDesigning and testing electronic circuits, embedded systems, working in labs or manufacturingPower systems, electrical infrastructure, industrial equipment, often in utility or construction settings
Industry UsageConsumer electronics, telecommunications, embedded systemsPower generation, distribution, industrial automation

Electronic Hardware Engineers focus on designing and developing electronic circuits and embedded systems, often working with small-scale components. Electrical Engineers work on larger electrical systems like power grids and industrial equipment. While both roles require similar educational backgrounds and certifications, their work environments and industry applications differ significantly.

This is a full-time, on-site embedded role supporting the ADAS and Infotainment Hardware team. The selected candidate will own the full V-cycle development of 12V Power Distribution Units (PDUs), from concept through production release.
Responsibilities
  • Lead full V-cycle development of 12V PDUs (up to 60A DC), including requirements definition, hardware design, verification, validation, and production handoff
  • Design and develop ECU hardware with a focus on power electronics, load switching, and protection circuits
  • Select and apply AEC-Q101 Logic-Level N-Channel Trench MOSFETs for low-voltage, high-current switching applications
  • Design and analyze half-bridge and full-bridge topologies for inductive load control within PDU architectures
  • Develop schematics using OrCAD; support PCB layout reviews with DFM considerations
  • Author and execute DVP&R test plans; perform bench-level hardware testing and failure analysis
  • Drive supplier and component qualification per automotive quality standards
  • Collaborate with systems, software, and validation teams across the ADAS and Infotainment hardware program
  • Maintain design documentation, BOMs, and engineering change records throughout the product lifecycle

Required Qualifications
  • 5-10 years of hands-on automotive power electronics hardware design experience
  • ECU hardware development background in an OEM or Tier 1 automotive environment
  • Proficiency in OrCAD schematic capture (hard requirement)
  • Strong working knowledge of AEC-Q101 Logic-Level N-Channel Trench MOSFETs in 12V automotive PDU design
  • Experience designing and analyzing half-bridge and full-bridge switching topologies
  • Proven ownership of hardware products through the full V-cycle, including DVP&R authoring and execution
  • Familiarity with gate driver IC selection and high-side/low-side switching circuit design
  • Understanding of automotive electrical architecture and 12V power distribution requirements
  • Engineering degree preferred; equivalent hands-on experience considered

Nice to Have
