What is an Electrical Engineer In Training (EIT)?

An Electrical Engineer In Training (EIT) is an entry-level engineering professional who has completed a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field and has passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. The EIT designation is a key step towards becoming a licensed Professional Engineer (PE). EITs typically work under the supervision of licensed engineers, gaining practical experience and knowledge required for full licensure. Their work may include assisting with the design, development, and testing of electrical systems and components. Becoming an EIT demonstrates a commitment to the engineering profession and adherence to high ethical standards.

What is the difference between Electrical Engineer In Training Eit vs Electrical Technician?

AspectElectrical Engineer In Training (EIT)Electrical Technician

Industry UsageEngineering firms, consulting, designConstruction, manufacturing, maintenance

The Electrical Engineer In Training (EIT) is a credential for recent engineering graduates aiming to become licensed professional engineers, focusing on design and planning. Electrical Technicians typically hold technical diplomas and work on hands-on tasks like installation and troubleshooting. While EITs are involved in engineering design and planning, electrical technicians focus on practical, field-based work. Both roles are essential in the electrical industry but serve different functions and career paths.

What are some typical responsibilities of an Electrical Engineer In Training (EIT) during their first year on the job?

As an Electrical Engineer In Training (EIT), you can expect to support senior engineers by assisting with design calculations, preparing drawings and documentation, and participating in site visits or inspections. You'll likely use software tools such as AutoCAD or Revit and help ensure projects comply with relevant codes and standards. EITs often collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, attend project meetings, and learn project management fundamentals. This hands-on experience is essential for developing your technical skills and preparing for eventual licensure as a Professional Engineer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical Engineer In Training (EIT), and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Engineer In Training (EIT), you need a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field, strong analytical skills, and successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. Familiarity with design software like AutoCAD, MATLAB, and industry standards is important, along with knowledge of electrical codes and safety regulations. Effective communication, teamwork, and a willingness to learn are crucial soft skills for collaborating on projects and adapting to new challenges. These qualifications and skills ensure accurate technical work, safe engineering practices, and professional growth toward becoming a licensed engineer.
