Job description

Job Summary:

Old Dominion Insulation seeks a motivated Takeoff Engineer to join our Preconstruction Team. This position is an excellent opportunity for both entry-level candidates with a strong work ethic and experienced estimators looking to grow their careers in the construction industry.

Since 1981, Old Dominion Insulation has partnered with general contractors, mechanical contractors, and building owners to provide best-in-class mechanical insulation for projects across the U.S., serving a wide range of market sectors.

The Takeoff Engineer plays a key role in preparing accurate project budgets, assisting with bids, and ensuring our team is well-prepared throughout the preconstruction phase. This role offers hands-on experience, mentorship from industry professionals, and a clear path for career development within a company that values safety, precision, and growth

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Attend site visits, pre-bid walkthroughs and other pre-project meetings
  • Compile all documents needed to generate a bid
  • Help collect additional information from customers and/or vendors as needed to assist estimators with identifying factors affecting costs, such as production time, materials, and labor; and incorporate quantities and pricing into the project budget
  • Organize, review, and prepare job files, identifying clear scopes of work and any potential risk factors
  • Assist with generating construction budget by studying plans, completing quality takeoffs, and evaluating updated plans for changes
  • Double-check estimates
  • Assist with presenting and explaining project budgets to customers, operations team, and others
  • Monitor customer and project deadlines and communicate any changes or issues to the team
  • Assist with identifying and tracking leads, proposals, and bids
  • Oversee work progress, review and update logs, and communicate potential issues and challenges to estimators and other team members
  • Identify and resolve deviations from the proposal, including scope and specifications, throughout the entire course of the project
  • Write up technical reports, purchase orders, project updates, and proposals



Minimum Qualifications:

  • A HS diploma or equivalent; or a combination of equivalent training, education and relevant work experience; two-year degree preferred.
  • Prior construction industry and safety experience preferred
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
  • Reliable and punctual
  • Must have a reliable transportation and available to work extended hours, as needed
  • Ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and manage time and priorities effectively
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to think critically and work independently
  • Demonstrated customer service skills
  • Must be an effective team player with a positive attitude
  • Very proficient using a computer and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Ability to interact with employees at all levels, supervisors, vendors, and other stakeholders in a positive, constructive manner
  • Preferred - Bilingual in Spanish and English

Physical Requirementsinclude but are not limited to the following:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Able to walk, sit, stand, bend, kneel, stretch, squat and climb
  • Able to travel to jobsites, meetings, and other destinations as needed
  • Able to see, talk and hear in person, via phone and/or through online/video
  • Able to use hands and fingers in a manner that allows for use of a keyboard and phone.
  • Able to lift & carry items up to 15 lbs.
