Position Summary:

Under the direction of Finance management, the Staff Accountantis responsible forkey components of the financial operations of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), its related PACs, and the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRCF). Focusing primarily on disbursements, expense management, fixedasset, and payrollaccounting, this position ensures the integrity and accuracy of financial data through hands-on processing, reconciliation, and policy enforcement while contributing to continuous improvement initiatives and system enhancements.

Disbursements/Expense Management:

  • Leadtheweeklyreview and processing ofvendor paymentsand reimbursements, ensuring compliance with internal policies,accurategeneral ledger coding,appropriate applicationof sales andusetax, and proper documentation and approvals.

  • Processdisbursementsof varying payment types,includingcuttingchecks,initiatingACH payments, and postingdirect debits and wire transfers.

  • Record recurring monthly journal entries and other adjustments, as needed.Reconcile Accounts Payable subsidiary system to the General Ledger, PrepaidExpensesand other General Ledger accounts, as assigned.

  • Prepare year-end IRS Form 1099-NEC & 1099-MISC mailings and electronic filings.

  • Ensure all monthlycentrally billedinvoices areprocessed timely.

  • Proactivelyidentifyand resolve disbursement issues and discrepancies, escalating to the supervisor asneeded.

  • Manage electronic record retention system foraccurate,timelyand easily accessible files, ensuring compliance with HRC procedures and best practices.

  • Contribute tothe development of Accounts Payable policies and procedures and training materials. Maintaintheongoing documentation of policies and proceduresand standard operating procedures (SOPs), as needed.

  • Serve as point of contactto high-volume questions/issuesregardingDisbursements, Travel & Expense Policy,CorporateCard program and ElectronicInvoice &ExpenseManagementSystem,delivering guidance and support to staff.

  • ReviewCorporateCardreportandemployeeexpensereporttransactionsforall supporting documentation,accuratecodingand adherence to HRC'sTravel andExpensePolicyand Procedures.Followup on missing receipts, approvals, and other issues as needed.

  • Act as back up tosupervisor, including administeringCorporateCardprogramandoverseeingElectronicInvoice &ExpenseManagementSystemmaintenance.

Fixed Assets:

  • Maintain fixed asset records, including acquisition tracking, asset categorization, and depreciation schedules, in compliance with GAAP and internal capitalization thresholds. Calculate depreciation and amortization, and key journal entries.

  • Reconcilefixed assetsand depreciation/amortizationto the general ledgerand resolve variancesona timelybasis.

  • Assistin calculating depreciation for the annual budget process.

Payroll:

  • Assistwith processing and reviewing biweekly payrollin a timely mannerwhilemaintainingconfidentiality.

  • Check and audit time and attendance records and adjustments inTimekeepingSystem for compliance with established guidelines. Process thedata transfertothe payroll system.

  • Maintain/update records for employees, including new hires, terminations, and promotions.

  • Process all employees' deductions, taxes and direct deposit information andmaintainemployee payrollfiles. Reconcileall health, supplemental benefits, 401(k), and garnishment deductions to the general ledger and vendors.

GeneralAccounting andCross-Functional Support:

  • Provide Finance training andguide newand existing staff on features and functions of the Accounting ERP,theElectronicInvoice &ExpenseManagementSystem,and the Timekeeping System,promoting a positive experience.

  • Supportmanagementwith special projects,implementationsandtrainings.

  • Cross collaboration with other departments to ensure excellent customer service

  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in accountingor related field(or equivalent work experience)and working knowledge of GAAP arestrongly preferred. Two to four years of relevantworkexperiencein anonprofitisstronglypreferred.CPP certificationdesired, butnot required.

  • Experience with Accounting ERP systems such as Microsoft Dynamics NAV, NetSuite, or Sage Intacct; invoice and expense management software such as Concur; and timekeeping and payroll software such as Replicon and UKG is preferred but notrequired.

  • Knowledgeof, or desire to learnabout, wageand hour laws (federal,stateand local) is preferred.

  • Experience with payroll functions, including preparation, balancing, timekeeping, internal control, and payroll taxes, is preferred.

  • Experience with 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4) and 527 organizations (preferred butnotrequired).

  • Strong skills with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel,PowerPointand Outlook), Google Apps (Gmail, GoogleDocs,and Drive).

  • Ability tomaintainconfidentiality and discretion.

  • Excellent customer service.

  • Communicateseffectively,proactivelyand professionally with vendors and members ofownteamand other departments within the organization.

  • Abilityto work independently and be team-oriented and willing toassistfellow Finance staff during peak times.

  • Flexibility with work schedule--this position requiresovertime, which may include nights and weekendsduring peak periods.

  • Experience in problem solving-shows initiative;identifiesand resolves problemsin a timely manner; gathers and analyzes information skillfully; and follows through on issues to resolution.

  • Approaches ambiguity and complex situations with critical thought anddemonstratesstrong judgement.

  • Ability to bedetail-oriented anddemonstrateaccuracy and thoroughness,monitorsown work to ensure quality,applies feedback to improve performance and is well-organized.

  • Mustmeetproductivity standards and complete workin a timely mannerto meet weekly and monthly deadlines.Musthave an understanding ofproper accounting controls.

  • Must behighly motivated andadaptto changes in the work environment,managecompeting demands and is able to deal with frequent change,delays,or unexpected events.

  • Personal interest in and commitment to LGBTQ+rights.
