Oversees the day-to-day functions of assigned department. Applies knowledge of library science principles to optimize production and quality and quantity of work. Assists in establishing and implementing departmental processes and procedures. Plans and budgets for hiring and scheduling. Other personnel matters include training, performance reviews and determining disciplinary action.
The Eccles Health Sciences Library at the University of Utah seeks an experienced and collaborative professional to serve as Public Services Supervisor. This position provides leadership for front-line library services that support students, faculty, clinicians, and researchers across the health sciences.
Reporting to the Associate Director, Operations Management, the Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily service desk operations, supervising staff (including student employees), and ensuring seamless access to library resources and services. The role requires sound judgment, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage complex priorities in user-centered environment.
Responsibilities
  • Lead Public Service Operations: Direct all aspects of the service desk, ensuring responsive, accurate, and professional support for the health sciences community.
  • Supervise & Mentor Staff: Recruit, train, schedule, and evaluate full-time and part-time employees; model a commitment to accountability, safety, and high-quality service. Ability to assign and delegate daily tasks to staff, ensuring timely follow-through on requests.
  • Building Management: Support building management by reporting facility issues, coordinating contractor access, and providing input on space planning and improvements.
  • Optimize Workflows & Services: Evaluate service models, recommend improvements, and implement best practices to enhance user experience and operational efficiency.
  • Manage Complex Service Interactions: Handle escalated patron concerns and provide guidance on access, borrowing, and resource navigation.
  • Oversee Circulation & Access Services: Ensure efficient and accurate circulation workflows, equipment lending, and user account management.
  • Triage Research & Reference Inquiries: Assess patron needs and connect users with appropriate experts or specialized services.
  • Support Compliance & Policy Implementation: Apply library and institutional policies consistently, including those related to privacy, access, and resource use.
  • Collaborate Across Units: Partner with faculty librarians, clinical information specialists, and campus units to support instruction, research, and clinical care.

Minimum Qualifications
Six years related experience including one year supervisory experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; basic knowledge of library science techniques and principles in order to provide oversight to assigned area required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.

Preferences
Experience in an academic health sciences or medical library, with familiarity using electronic resource access tools. Supervisory experience with ability to lead change initiatives and improve service delivery.

         Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with various audiences 
         Reliable, dependable, and punctual
