Responsibilities

Abides by and enforces all compliance requirements and policies and performs these responsibilities in an ethical manner consistent with the organization’s values; adheres to hospital policies including confidentiality; orients and instructs Clinical Laboratory Science students or new employees; utilizes proper body mechanics when moving, positioning and transferring patients without assistance or with assistance when needed for patient safety and moving equipment/supplies that are necessary to perform essential functions; evaluates and solves problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis; follows standard procedures and competently performs routine, timed and STAT moderate and complex laboratory tests; recognizes deviation from expected results; analyzes and corrects problems maintaining written or computer documentation; reports all critical values following laboratory protocol; maintains instruments by performing maintenance procedures and calibration; operates and utilizes necessary programs on LIS, CIS or PC; obtains blood specimens from patients; monitors the work pending log of designated section and documents action taken; maintains a neat and efficient work area by cleaning bench tops, equipment/instruments and replenishing supplies; teaches instrument operation or procedures to Clinical Laboratory Science students or new employees as assigned; retrieves patient reports in a timely manner and maintains records of test results, standards and controls needed for reference and documentation; responsible for supervision of a section or shift on a temporary basis as delegated; utilizes a personal computer or terminal to access the Clinical Information Systems; communicates and uses appropriate customer relation skills with physicians, patients, families and healthcare team in person and via telephone; responds to overhead pages and digital pager; maintains accurate and complete records by analyzing quality control data, evaluating results and taking appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision, documenting results or actions in writing or by computer, documenting customer complaints, ordering, or registration errors and reporting each to supervisor for corrective action; completes all mandatory unit, educational and hospital requirements; utilizes cost effective practices in performing all aspects of the job; adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards; accesses and accurately maintains paper and electronic medical records; participates on committees as assigned; participates in Performance Improvement activities as assigned; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required to include weekends and holidays; related duties as required.
