Job description

CNC Commissioning Engineer

Position Summary

The CNC Commissioning Engineer owns the commissioning and startup of large CNC machine tools from initial power-up through full production readiness. This role is responsible for troubleshooting and optimizing multi-axis motion systems, resolving electrical and servo-related issues, and delivering fully validated, production-capable machines.

Working across platforms such as Siemens, Beckhoff, and Fanuc, this position provides high exposure to complex automation systems and offers accelerated development through hands-on commissioning in diverse customer environments. This role requires up to 75% travel.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead full CNC machine prove-out from initial power-up through production acceptance
  • Perform software loading, parameter configuration, and full system initialization
  • Troubleshoot multi-axis motion systems (open and closed loop)
  • Execute servo tuning and axis compensation to ensure machine accuracy and geometry
  • Diagnose and resolve wiring, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues
  • Interpret electrical and fluid schematics and implement necessary corrections
  • Ensure machines meet all performance, safety, and customer acceptance requirements prior to final handover
  • Provide field service and warranty support to maintain machine performance and customer satisfaction
  • Train junior systems engineers and support customer handover processes

Required Qualifications

  • Proven ability to independently own commissioning efforts from troubleshooting through resolution with minimal supervision
  • Strong experience with programming and ladder logic troubleshooting
  • Solid understanding of AC/DC electrical circuits
  • Ability to interpret electrical and fluid schematics
  • Proficient in use of diagnostic tools such as multimeters
  • Experience with CNC/PLC platforms (Siemens, Fanuc, Beckhoff or similar)
  • Strong communication skills to clearly convey technical issues to customers, operators, and engineering teams
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent commissioning efforts in time-sensitive environments
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally (up to 75%)
  • Commitment to safe work practices (PPE, Lockout-Tagout, etc.)
  • 3+ years of experience in an automated manufacturing environment

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in any of the following areas is highly desirable:

  • CNC geometry compensation and machine alignment
  • Servo drive tuning and multi-axis motion optimization
  • CNC parameter optimization, including axis drive tuning and performance calibration
  • Robotics systems (ABB, KUKA, or similar)
  • Vision systems and inspection software
  • IIoT / Industry 4.0 technologies
  • Machine safety systems (SIL standards, risk assessments)

Location & Clearance Requirements

  • Significant travel required (up to 75%), including domestic and international assignments
  • Must be able to work in industrial manufacturing environments

Compensation & Benefits

  • $97,000 - $120,000
  • Travel-related benefits and exposure to advanced manufacturing environments
  • Opportunity for accelerated technical growth through hands-on commissioning work
