Job description
Section Chief, Hematology and Hematologic Malignancy
Dartmouth Health, Dartmouth Cancer Center (DCC), and Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine announce a national search for the Section Chief of Hematology and Hematologic Malignancy. The new Section Chief will enrich the longstanding and distinguished reputation of the Division while leveraging the inherent synergies within DCC and Dartmouth Health. The next Section Chief will be a nationally prominent physician scientist with a history of research funding and the experience and skills to lead the Section in an era when diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities in malignant disease have never been more promising. They will provide strategic vision and leadership for the growth and expansion of clinical, academic, and administrative activities of the Section. The successful candidate will further enhance an environment that has a strong sense of community and collaboration, with over 256 active and ongoing research projects, led by 145 Cancer Center members, and supported by more than $68M in grant funding annually from federal and other sources.
The ideal candidate will partner with DCC’s senior leadership in strategic pursuit of the next level of excellence among elite cancer centers in the country and work to execute the Cancer Center's strategic goals. Development of a diverse workforce is a priority, and the new Section Chief will lead the recruitment of world-class translational clinician scientists. Leadership and oversight for translational science, clinical research, and clinical operations of the Cancer Center, including the setting of aspirational goals, developing practical pathways to achievement, and meeting clinical and academic milestones are key responsibilities for the new Section Chief. Importantly, the Cancer Center is a leader in a regional care network serving patients from five states across northern New England, and they will represent the Cancer Center in local, statewide, and regional collaborations.
As Section Chief, the successful candidate will serve as the chief academic and administrative officer for the Section of Hematology and Hematologic Malignancy. They will ensure that research, education, clinical operations, and community outreach are aligned to support a demanding and high-quality academic practice. This includes ongoing commitment to lead growth of programs in a complex academic environment, ensuring that the academic and clinical activities of DCC bring increasing value to its many stakeholders and distinction to Dartmouth Health nationally and internationally.
The Section Chief will identify and promote synergies within the Department of Medicine, DCC, the Geisel School of Medicine, and Dartmouth Health to further shared goals and support initiatives whenever possible. A can-do outlook and optimistic perspective on innovation will be essential for success in this group of institutions committed to ongoing improvement. The ideal candidate is a dynamic leader with demonstrated outstanding academic, clinical and leadership skills.
The Section Chief will have high emotional intelligence and be a consensus-oriented individual who displays “respectful courage” and is highly influential in their ability to encourage people forward. A highly collaborative style is essential in developing and maintaining physician relations that build on their key roles as both partners and customers. They will be seen as a champion for diversity, equity, and inclusion in all areas of the institution. Indeed, the success of the Section Chief will be measured in part by success in recruiting, developing, and promoting women and underrepresented minorities.
Key Goals of the new Section Chief, Hematology and Hematologic Malignancy:
- Collaborate with faculty and leadership to create a clear vision for the Section, one that continues to inspire faculty engagement, produces growth and innovation in patient care, and elevates the stature of the Section regionally, nationally, and internationally.
- Grow the Section’s research activity and metrics, particularly in translational research, taking advantage of the extraordinary intellectual resources of both DCC, Dartmouth College and the Geisel School of Medicine.
- Raise the stature of the Section’s fellowship program in hematology/oncology and retention of trainees as future faculty, NCI funding for training grants, and evaluation of outcomes for program improvement.
- Grow and develop benign hematology in its education, research, and clinical activities.
- Recruit a diverse high caliber, high impact faculty, provide necessary leadership and support to ensure faculty development, retention, and promotion.
Experiences and Professional Qualifications:
Qualified candidates must hold a medical degree MD or MD/PhD. Candidates must be board certified and eligible for licensure and clinical practice in the state of New Hampshire. Candidates must be eligible for a faculty appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level in the Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine.
The ideal candidate is expected to be a highly respected physician scientist, possess dynamic leadership skills and administrative expertise, and to lead in a manner that supports and contributes to the success and unity of the section, department, Cancer Center, hospital and its affiliates, and the medical school. In addition, the Section Chief will:
- Bring a proven track record of progressive leadership experience within a matrixed institution and the ability to integrate comprehensive hematology and hematologic malignancy services to meet the needs of the growing clinical enterprise.
- Articulate a compelling vision for the future of the Section within a highly regarded academic health system and to the community in general.
- Demonstrate expertise at building strong internal and external relationships, with a track record of working collaboratively with academic partners, physician scientists, physician leaders and diverse management teams and/or affiliated partnerships to support the implementation of clinical programs and quality initiatives.
- Be a "systems thinker" who demonstrates an understanding, innovative thinking, and an expertise with various operating entities of an integrated healthcare system.
- Be a consensus-oriented individual who displays "respectful courage" and is highly influential in their ability to encourage people forward.
- Understand the organizational landscape and be able to anticipate the critical issues, opportunities, and threats in the foreseeable future.
- Demonstrate the ability to drive the implementation of strategic and annual operating plans that ensure people, systems, and processes are coordinated, integrated, and aligned.
- Demonstrate experience in aligning, expanding, and sustaining innovative quality, safety, and performance improvement initiatives that achieve superior clinical quality, favorable financial outcomes, and high patient/physician/employee satisfaction.
- Contribute to the improvement of cancer care delivery by the advancement of the DCC's role in the transformation and evolution of a regional and state-wide health strategy.
- Develop and mentor the academic careers of faculty/fellows and be skilled in the recruitment of outstanding new faculty to build high performing cohesive teams and cultivate a pipeline of next generation leaders within Dartmouth Health.
- Collaborate across institutions in the continued development of the clinical enterprise to foster and uniquely broaden multidisciplinary clinical education and research innovations.
- Promote an environment of accountability and continuous performance improvement by establishing and monitoring concrete performance measures to drive achievement of targeted outcomes.
- Support Dartmouth Health's goal to recognize the value of all employees, embrace diversity and contribute to a positive, collaborative culture that leads to commitment to the organization's success.
- Display impeccable values, ethical standards, and high emotional intelligence.
The Dartmouth Cancer Center (DCC) is one of only 53 NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers and the only one north of Boston and east of Buffalo. DCC was originally named for the late Senator Norris Cotton, who represented New Hampshire in the United States Congress from 1947 to 1974 and was instrumental in securing a $3M federal grant in 1970 to build rural New England's first regional cancer center. DCC achieved its NCI designation in 1978 and its Comprehensive status in 1990. In 2022, DCC assumed its new name as part of the rebranding effort by parent institution Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health, now Dartmouth Health. DCC is committed to providing access to research-based, high-quality care, advanced technologies, and clinical trials for patients throughout northern New England. Its research, clinical care, and training are integrated at the Cancer Center with priority on translation of innovation, interdisciplinary care, team science, and career development. DCC is an active partner with the CDC-funded New Hampshire Comprehensive Cancer Collaboration and Dartmouth’s CDC-funded Prevention Research Center.
Application Procedure:
Applications should include a detailed curriculum vitae and a letter of interest that highlight the applicant’s personal vision and relevant leadership experience, including detailed information regarding how the applicant’s professional activities have contributed to enhancing diversity, equity and inclusion. The search committee will begin reviewing candidates immediately and will continue until the position is filled. To ensure full consideration, inquiries, nominations, and applications should be submitted electronically in confidence, to: jacqueline.m.labelle@hitchcock.org.
