Job Description
RESPONSIBILITY
Is responsible for carrying out procedures established for safe and efficient operation of the Steam Plant and auxiliaries. Directs boiler operation and maintenance to be accomplished by Steam Plant personnel. Train other personnel as required. Responsible for housecleaning and for keeping equipment in operating condition. Uses tools and performs manual work, as may be required at times, although. work in general would be considered light. Also performs water testing and treatment. Assists in training of lesser qualified individuals and may not leave assignment without authorized relief. Makes many checks and performs inspections when needed or according to department schedules.
GENERAL SUMMARY
Is responsible for safe and efficient operation of steam boilers and auxiliaries, including all phases of steam plant operation. General duties are light, however, more strenuous effort and considerable climbing is involved in emergencies and extensive inspection tours. Due to general steam plant conditions and heavy work required in emergency, should be .in good physical condition.
CLASSIFICATION - Stationary Engineer - Steam Plant
JOB CONDITIONS -
Generally works inside, encountering some dust, dirt and oil; heat around boilers Causes some discomfort. Exposure to dirt while performing cleaning, inspection and maintenance duties. Exposure to dirt and the elements on occasional. outside trips required for inspection of auxiliaries, assistance in coal handling and other operations as required. Exposure to hazardous chemicals.
STRENUOUSNESS
General duties not continuously of strenuous nature; .major portion of time spent overseeing boiler operation and machinery inspections but on feet most of day with some climbing of stairways. Exceptions occur during emergencies, equipment outages, and off peak maintenance and inspection periods. Heavy lifting sometimes necessary; use of sledge hammer, pry bars, shovels, etc., required while assisting in coal pocket break-up ..
SKILL-
Two (2) - three (3) months on-the-job training required. Three (3) years prior steam plant experience required. Must be thoroughly acquainted with all phases of steam plant equipment and operation, and its maintenance. Required knowledge of feed water treatment, testing and control. Required to have passed an examination given by State of. Ohio certifying that the participant is skilled in the operation of boilers, turbines and steam engines. Minimum 3rd class Stationary Steam Engineer, 1st class preferable.
RESPONSIBILITY
Under supervision of Supervisor, and as working leader, is responsible for carrying out procedures established for safe and efficient operation of the steam plant and its auxiliaries. Directs boiler operations as required and, as necessary, any maintenance accomplished by steam plant personnel; trains personnel as required. Responsible for maintaining schedule of coal into bunkers in order to assure a safe running reserved to all boilers; as necessary, assists in the break-up of coal pockets and in other handling operations, and is responsible, in general, for maintaining continuity of operations. Is responsible for housecleaning, wiping and, in general, keeping all equipment, floors, etc.in assigned areas clean. Uses hand tools in performing daily work assignments. Runs routine water tests, logs :results and adjusts controls to maintain prescribed water treatment as required. Performs lubrication on equipment as assigned. May not leave job assignment without authorized relief.
EDUCATION-
Ohio State 3rd Class Stationary Engineer's License.

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Minimum of three years' prior steam plant experience including all phases of steam plant equipment, operating and maintenance. Must have at least Ohio State 3rd Class Stationary Engineer license. Must have valid State driver's license and be able to operate standard and automatic transmission vehicles.
