Reports ToAthletic Director and Building Principal
Position PurposeThe Middle School Cheer Coach is responsible for leading and supervising the middle school cheer program in a manner that promotes school spirit, teamwork, discipline, leadership, sportsmanship, and student growth. The coach shall organize and administer all aspects of the cheer program while supporting the mission, values, and expectations of Griffith Public Schools.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesProgram Leadership- Direct and supervise all aspects of the middle school cheer program.
- Plan and conduct practices, performances, and game/event preparations.
- Teach cheer techniques, routines, chants, motions, jumps, stunts, and safety procedures appropriate for middle school students.
- Promote a positive, respectful, and team-oriented culture within the program.
- Model and reinforce sportsmanship, integrity, leadership, and appropriate conduct.
Student Development- Encourage academic success, responsibility, teamwork, and positive citizenship among student participants.
- Establish and communicate expectations regarding attendance, behavior, academics, and participation.
- Provide guidance and mentorship that supports student confidence, school spirit, and personal growth.
- Foster an inclusive and supportive environment for all participants.
Supervision and Safety- Ensure appropriate supervision of students during practices, games, performances, travel, and related events.
- Maintain compliance with all safety expectations and applicable athletic/activity guidelines.
- Monitor and ensure proper use and care of uniforms, equipment, and facilities.
- Respond appropriately to injuries, emergencies, and student concerns.
- Ensure that all stunting and cheer activities are conducted in a safe and age-appropriate manner.
Communication and Collaboration- Maintain professional communication with students, parents, staff, administration, and event personnel.
- Work collaboratively with athletic staff, sponsors, and school administration.
- Attend required meetings, events, and athletic functions as assigned.
- Promote positive relationships between the cheer program and the school community.
Administrative Responsibilities- Follow all district policies, athletic/activity procedures, and applicable Indiana middle school activity guidelines.
- Complete rosters, transportation requests, inventories, fundraising documentation, and other required paperwork in a timely manner.
- Assist with organization of uniforms, equipment, schedules, and team events.
- Support school spirit initiatives and participation at designated athletic and school events.
Professional Expectations- Maintain professionalism and appropriate conduct at all times.
- Serve as a positive representative of Griffith Public Schools.
- Participate in required trainings, certifications, and professional development activities.
- Maintain required certifications including CPR/AED and concussion training, if applicable.
Qualifications- Previous cheerleading, dance, gymnastics, or coaching experience preferred.
- Knowledge of cheer fundamentals, safety expectations, and middle school student development.
- Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively with students, staff, parents, and community members.
- Must meet all district and state coaching/activity sponsor requirements.
Working Conditions- Requires evening and occasional weekend responsibilities.
- Requires attendance at practices, athletic events, performances, and school activities.
- Work may involve physical activity associated with coaching and supervision.
Terms of Employment- Position follows the athletic/activity stipend schedule approved by the Griffith Public Schools Board of School Trustees.
- Employment is contingent upon successful background checks and completion of all required trainings and certifications.
EvaluationPerformance will be evaluated by the Athletic Director and/or Building Principal in accordance with district procedures and expectations for athletic personnel.
