What are Charter Colonies?

Charter Colonies were a type of colonial administration in early America, established through charters granted by the English monarch to individuals, companies, or groups. These charters outlined the rights and privileges of the colony, including self-governance through elected assemblies and officials. The most notable charter colonies were Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts Bay, which enjoyed significant autonomy compared to royal or proprietary colonies. The colonists in charter colonies had more control over their laws, government structure, and daily affairs. This autonomy contributed to the development of democratic principles in America.
