Position Summary

The PRN Histotechnician will utilize the knowledge necessary to assist the IHC laboratory at Caris Life Sciences with microtomy, re-embedding, and slide preparation. This position works under direct supervision and follows standard procedures and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs routine histology tasks: embedding and microtomy. The use of cassette printer, timers, microscope, oven, and cover slipping. The competency for a PRN Histotechnician involves IHC Microtomy and Embedding/Re-Embedding.

  • Responsible for the successful execution of laboratory protocols and standard operating procedures, including decontamination protocols. Undergoes training and routine competencies for applicable tasks completed within the department.

  • Maintains diagnostic viability of all specimens and ensures correct patient labeling, by routinely verifying that case identification numbers match blocks and slides during each processing step.

  • Documents in laboratory logs and the laboratory information system (LIS), as directed by standard operating procedures.

  • Maintains equipment maintenance logs and ensures that the equipment is in proper working order and notifies leadership if maintenance and/or repairs are needed.

  • Demonstrates capability of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of tests results and takes appropriate action

  • Assists as needed to perform other related duties and special projects to support the laboratory, as required.

  • Accepts other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of high school diploma and one year of microtomy and embedding experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • HT/HTL (ASCP) certification

Physical Demands

  • Will work at a computer some of the time as well as need to keep inventory and ordering records requiring the use of copiers, fax machines, and PDF scanners.

  • Visual acuity and analytical skill to distinguish fine detail and the ability to pass a visual color discrimination test.

  • Manual dexterity to use common laboratory equipment and perform sterile techniques as required.

  • Must possess ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.

  • Must possess ability to perform repetitive motion.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

  • May have exposure to high noise levels in the data center, fumes, and bio-hazardous material in the lab environment. Exposure to formaldehyde, xylene, DAB, and alcohol which emit fumes. The formaldehyde, xylene, and DAB are carcinogenic.

  • May be required to handle blood-borne pathogens and general laboratory reagents.

  • Must possess ability to use a microtome for extended periods of time.

  • May have exposure to extreme temperatures, high noise levels, fumes, and bio-hazardous material/chemicals including formalin in the lab environment.

  • All job specific, safety, and compliance training are assigned based on the job functions associated with this employee.

Other

  • This position requires periodic travel and some evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
