Located in northeastern Indiana, Fort Wayne is 18 miles (29 km) west of the Ohio border and 50 miles (80 km) south of the Michigan border. Fort Wayne was built in 1794 by the United States Army under the direction of American Revolutionary War general Anthony Wayne, the last in a series of forts built near the Miami village of Kekionga. Named in Wayne's honor, the European-American settlement developed at the confluence of the St. Joseph, St. Mary's, and Maumee rivers as a trading post for pioneers. The village was platted in 1823 and underwent tremendous growth after completion of the Wabash and Erie Canal and advent of the railroad. Once a booming manufacturing town located in what became known as the Rust Belt, Fort Wayne's economy in the 21st century is based upon distribution, transportation and logistics, healthcare, professional and business services, leisure and hospitality, and financial services. VA Northern Indiana Health Care System (VANIHCS) was formed in 1995 by the integration of the VA Medical Centers in Fort Wayne and Marion, Indiana. The Fort Wayne Campus offers primary and secondary medical and surgical services, and the Marion Campus offers a full range of mental health, nursing home care, and extended care services.
Since 1950 VANIHCS Fort Wayne Campus has been improving the health of the men and woman who have so proudly served our nation. The Fort Wayne campus has a 26 bed medical center providing acute medical and surgical services, as well as primary care, medical and surgical specialty care and mental health clinics.
Fort Wayne Campus also offers programs for the treatment of disorders such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Substance Abuse Treatment Program (SATP).

General Surgeon - RESPONSIBILITIES (listed are included but not limited to)
  • The General Surgeon provides comprehensive general surgery care, including pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care.
  • Be present on time for scheduled clinic and surgical sessions.
  • The General Surgeon performs assessments, diagnose conditions, develop treatment plans, and perform surgeries as needed.
  • Provide follow-up care to ensure the proper recovery of patients, including managing complications or side effects post-surgery.
  • The General Surgeon provides expert surgical consultations to referring physicians, ensuring clear communication and collaboration for optimal patient care.

General Surgeon - REQUIREMENTS
  • Graduated from an accredited medical school and completion of an accredited residency program in general surgery.
  • Board certified by the American Board of Surgery (ABS).
  • Current DEA Certification is required.
  • Must have a Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are required.
  • Must hold a permanent, full, and unrestricted medical license to practice in any U.S. state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory.
