Job description

Company Overview We are an innovative clinical-stage biotechnology company based in La Jolla, California, pioneering the development of oncolytic virus therapies to transform cancer treatment. Our platform harnesses engineered viruses to selectively target and destroy tumor cells while stimulating robust anti-tumor immune responses. With a promising pipeline in immuno-oncology, we are poised for significant growth and are seeking a dynamic leader to drive our business forward.

Position Overview Reporting directly to the CEO, the Chief Business Officer (CBO) will be a key member of the executive team, responsible for shaping and executing the company's business strategy. The primary focus will be on leading capital raising efforts (including venture financing, non-dilutive funding, and potential public offerings) and forging strategic partnerships (such as collaborations, licensing deals, and co-development agreements with pharma and biotech partners). The CBO will play a pivotal role in maximizing the value of our oncolytic virus platform, building investor confidence, and positioning the company for long-term success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead fundraising initiatives, including preparing compelling pitch materials, cultivating relationships with venture capital firms, strategic investors, and institutional funds, and closing financing rounds to support pipeline advancement.
  • Identify, evaluate, negotiate, and execute strategic partnerships, licensing agreements, and collaborations with pharmaceutical companies, academic institutions, and other stakeholders to accelerate development and expand the reach of our oncolytic therapies.
  • Develop and implement corporate strategy, including competitive intelligence, market analysis, and long-term planning in the immuno-oncology and viral therapy landscape.
  • Represent the company externally at investor meetings, scientific conferences, partnering events (e.g., BIO, JPMorgan Healthcare Conference), and industry forums to build visibility and networks.
  • Collaborate closely with R&D, clinical, and executive teams to align business development opportunities with scientific milestones and company goals.
  • Oversee alliance management for existing and future partnerships, ensuring value creation and smooth execution.
  • Contribute to corporate communications, including investor relations and board presentations.

Qualifications

  • A scientific background in life sciences, immunology, virology, or oncology is highly desirable.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in biotechnology or pharmaceutical industries, with at least 7 years in business development, corporate strategy, or investment roles.
  • Proven track record of successfully leading capital raises (Series A/B/C or beyond) and closing high-value strategic partnerships/licensing deals in biotech.
  • Experience with oncolytic virus therapies, viral vectors, or immuno-oncology companies is a significant plus.
  • Established network in the biotech investor community (VCs, pharma BD teams) and a history of building productive relationships.
  • Exceptional negotiation, communication, and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate complex scientific and business concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical skills, financial acumen, and a results-oriented mindset.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment with a hands-on approach.

What We Offer

  • Competitive compensation package, including significant equity participation.
  • Comprehensive benefits, including health insurance, 401(k), and relocation assistance if needed.
  • Opportunity to join a cutting-edge oncolytic biotech at an exciting growth stage in the vibrant La Jolla/San Diego life sciences ecosystem.
  • Collaborative culture focused on innovation and impacting patients' lives.

We are an equal opportunity employer.
