Building Substitute (Pathway to Classroom Teacher)


Indiana Math and Science Academy North is seeking a highly motivated, dedicated, and enthusiastic Building Substitute to join our team of outstanding educators. This role is ideal for an individual who is passionate about education and interested in growing into a full-time classroom teaching position.


The Building Substitute plays a vital role in supporting daily instruction, maintaining continuity of learning, and building strong relationships with students and staff. This position includes opportunities to support small group instruction, including math intervention, and to gain hands-on classroom experience across grade levels.


Primary Functions
  • Provide classroom coverage when teachers are absent or attending meetings
  • Maintain a consistent and productive learning environment across grade levels
  • When not providing coverage, support students through small group tutoring in reading or math
  • Build the skills and experience necessary to transition into a lead classroom teaching role
Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Deliver lesson plans and facilitate classroom instruction in the absence of the classroom teacher
  • Maintain a positive, structured, and engaging classroom environment
  • Monitor student behavior and ensure a safe and respectful learning space
  • Build positive relationships with students, staff, and families
  • Support small group tutoring in reading or math when coverage is not needed
  • Assist with differentiated instruction and flexible grouping as appropriate
  • Encourage critical thinking, independence, and student engagement
  • Communicate effectively with teachers and administration regarding student progress and classroom needs
  • Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, and other assigned areas
