Function / Position Summary
Building substitutes implement daily student instructional plan in the absence of the classroom teacher, guide the learning process toward the achievement of the District curriculum and goals in an effective manner, ensure a safe classroom environment and proper classroom management, and maintain reasonable rules of conduct encouraging self-discipline and responsibility. Building substitutes serve as a positive role model for students, demonstrating professionalism that includes a positive attitude, positive and respectful communication, and professional appearance. Building substitutes are assigned in one building for the duration of the school year.
Job Duties / Responsibilities
  • Reports to the main office upon arrival for assignments and checks out in the main office at the end of the day.
  • Adheres to the work schedule to allow enough time for check in, review of substitute plans, and be prepared for the day when the students enter the classroom.
  • Implements the instructional plans prepared by the teacher and/or school administrator.
  • Completes all duties of the teacher including supervision assignments (i.e. bus duty, hall duty, study hall, lunchroom/recess).
  • Completes daily reports required of the teacher, including attendance and feedback regarding instruction, discipline, and other events of the day.
  • Completes any additional work as directed by administration during free periods.
  • Actively engages with students during assignments, clearly communicates expectations, and adapts to individual learning needs, providing individual and small group instruction.
  • Follows all necessary and reasonable safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintains a high level of professionalism, integrity, and confidentiality in regards to school, students, parents, or other staff members.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education
  • Bachelor's degree or higher.
  • Illinois State Board of Education licensure requirements for Substitute Teacher which include one of the following (license must be registered in Kane County):
    • Professional Educator License
    • Substitute Teaching License

Experience / Knowledge
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administration, parents, students and staff members.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with colleagues.
  • Ability to remain flexible and be willing to adapt to change at short notice.
  • Ability to use initiative to problem solve when issues arise and make decisions based on the best interest of students.

Physical Demands
  • Requires prolonged sitting or standing.
  • Occasionally requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials.
  • Occasional stooping, bending, and reaching.

Terms of Employment
  • This is a position for the 2026-2027 academic year only.
  • Salary and benefits are as established by the Board of Education.
