Summary
Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), School of Medicine Temple campus (BCMT) in Temple, Texas is seeking a qualified and experienced individual as a Senior Faculty member for the anatomy education curriculum. This is a full-time faculty position at BCMT with an academic appointment (Associate/Professor, dependent on qualifications) in the Huffington Department of Education, Innovation and Technology. The successful applicant will have experience in teaching anatomical science topics, such as human gross anatomy, histology, embryology, and neuroanatomy in both didactic active learning sessions and lab settings.
This position will report directly to the Medical Director of BCM Anatomy Education Core (AEC) and Willed Body Program (WBP) and has three facets.
  • Oversee the BCM SOM anatomy curriculum at the Temple Campus.
  • Serves as the Medical Director of the Baylor Scott White Health Anatomy Facility at the Temple campus. Oversee the Baylor Scott & White Health (BSWH) Anatomy Facility and provide support to the Baylor Scott White Medical Center (BSWMC)-Temple GME programs. This aspect of the role will report to the BSWH senior vice-president of clinical medical education with effort allocation of 0.1 FTE.

Job Purpose:
This faculty member will be a part of BCM SOM curriculum team and facilitate human gross anatomy cadaver dissection labs, team-teach human gross anatomy and embryology lectures/small group discussions, and assist teaching histology and neuroanatomy labs. This individual will work with program directors and lab managers in both Houston and Temple campuses to maintain the anatomy lab facility and oversee the use of anatomical specimens for all activities within the facility. Some effort will also be directed towards the teaching of the GME curriculum within Baylor Scott and White.
Job Duties
  • Direct involvement in the education activities of the SOM at BCMT. This includes but is not limited to:
    • Content development, small or large group discussion sessions, human gross anatomy dissection labs, histology labs, and neuroanatomy labs.
    • Leadership and guidance to faculty and teaching assistants in gross anatomy, histology, and neuroanatomy labs.
    • Participation in committee work of SOM at BCMT.
    • Participation in faculty development and training.
    • Providing feedback to anatomy education core director and BCM SOM leadership about anatomy education.
  • Co-lead the BSWH anatomy facility including with the director of clinical simulation:
    • Supervision of BCMT anatomy faculty
    • Mentorship of the BSWH Center for Anatomical Science Education (CASE) staff in matters relating to human donor best practices and generalized team support
    • Teaching and support for BSWMC-Temple GME anatomy activities
    • Collaborative support with administrative director on maintenance of lab equipment, dissection tools, models, computers, etc.
    • Collaborate with BSWH Anatomy lab team to help ensure compliance with state regulations to maintain accreditation of the BSWH anatomy facility
  • In coordination with the BCM Willed Body Program
    • Maintain and organize human specimens (cadavers and prosections)
    • Assist in regular cadaver and human specimen inventory inspections.
    • Develop teaching specimens for anatomy courses
    • Collaborate with the executive director of the Willed Body Program (WBP) at BCMH in lab management and lab inspections

Minimum Qualifications
  • An earned doctoral degree (Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent)
  • Three full years' experience in teaching medical or health professional students' human gross anatomy cadaveric lab dissections involving all systems and body regions.
  • Experience in preparing human cadaver prosection samples.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Five or more years of teaching human anatomy subjects (gross, embryology, histology, neuroanatomy) to medical and health professional students in a North American educational institution.
  • Experience in supervising faculty/staff teams; providing feedback and managing workload of team
  • Involvement in managing a willed body program in a US medical school.
  • Involvement in medical curriculum design or reformation in a US medical school.
  • Experience designing and facilitating active learning sessions, including small group instruction, problem-based learning (PBL), and case-based learning methodologies.
  • Experience in teaching or leading histology and/or neuroanatomy labs.
  • Experience in teaching embryology
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience in developing USMLE style exam questions.
  • Good team player.
  • Experience in innovative teaching methods and scholarly activities.
